The United States government has announced a $500,000 aid package (approximately 429,000 euros) following devastating floods along the border between Nepal and China. The situation has resulted in over 160 deaths and nearly 580 people missing, and the Embassy in Kathmandu is working with local authorities to locate affected U.S. citizens.
A spokesperson for the State Department noted that Washington is closely monitoring the situation and has sent a disaster response advisor to support relief efforts in the region. This assistance package is part of an agreement with Catholic Relief Services, aimed at funding emergency shelters, essential supplies, and water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance for communities impacted by the flooding.
Furthermore, the spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu is closely collaborating with local authorities to locate and assist American citizens in the affected areas. Citizens needing urgent assistance related to the flooding have been asked to contact the embassy via email. The United States has also expressed its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives. ‘Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this disaster,’ the official statement reads.
The Nepalese police have reported that 162 bodies have been recovered so far in seven districts of the country. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, citing Nepal’s tourism authorities, has reported that 579 travelers are missing in the affected areas, of which 466 are foreigners and 113 are Nepali nationals.
