Line 22 is the colectivo (city bus) that links Retiro with Quilmes via the Bajo area of downtown Buenos Aires, Barracas, Avellaneda and Bernal. It leaves the Retiro Bus Terminal and has two ramales (branches): the A ends at Av. Centenario and Lavalleja, in Quilmes, and the B at Quilmes station on the Roca train line. The line is run by Línea 22 S.A. and, according to SUBE open data, it recorded about 15,500 trips on a typical weekday in August and September 2026. A word of caution when searching: Paraná, Santa Fe and Neuquén also have a “línea 22” (line 22). This guide covers bus 22 in the AMBA.

Bus 22 route

The two branches share almost the whole route. They leave from inside the Retiro Bus Terminal via Av. Antártida Argentina and Av. Ramos Mejía and join the Metrobús del Bajo via Av. del Libertador. They leave the Metrobús at Perón, pass Av. Rivadavia and Bolívar, next to Plaza de Mayo, and via Av. Julio A. Roca and Av. Belgrano return to the bus lane up to the Autopista 25 de Mayo. From there they continue along Av. Paseo Colón, Av. Juan de Garay and Bolívar.

In the south of the city the 22 crosses Barracas along Av. Martín García, Av. Regimiento de Patricios and Av. Montes de Oca, and at Río Cuarto it joins the Autopista 9 de Julio Sur to cross the Riachuelo over the new Puente Pueyrredón. Once in Avellaneda it runs along Av. Belgrano and takes Av. Mitre, with landmark stops at Av. Belgrano and M. Acosta, Av. Mitre and Independencia, and Av. Mitre and Matanza. It then continues along Av. Dardo Rocha (fare section Av. Dardo Rocha and Av. Montevideo) towards Bernal and Quilmes.

Bus 22 to Quilmes station (branch B)

The 22B passes Bernal station and ends at Quilmes station on the Roca train line, on Carlos Pellegrini. It is about 26 km from Retiro. This is the branch to take if you are going to change to the train or if your destination is in central Quilmes, near the station.

Bus 22 to Av. Centenario and Lavalleja (branch A)

The 22A follows the same route as the B to Quilmes, but does not stop at the station: it continues along Carlos Pellegrini, Gran Canaria, Corrientes, Vicente López and Laprida to Av. Centenario and Lavalleja. It is about 29 km from Retiro. If you are going beyond Quilmes station, make sure the sign says A.

💡 Good to know: between Retiro and Quilmes station any 22 will do, because the A and the B follow the same route. The letter only matters if you are going beyond the station, towards Av. Centenario.

Bus 22 timetable and frequency

According to the annex to Resolution 801/2024, both branches are authorised to run 24 hours a day, every day. At rush hour, the frequency cannot be worse than one bus every 6.5 minutes on branch A and every 7.5 minutes on branch B, with the full fleet. There is no official published timetable per branch, so we do not give exact times, either for public holidays or for Sundays.

SUBE data show how service drops at weekends: about 15,500 trips on a weekday, about 7,600 on a Saturday and about 5,600 on a Sunday. If you are travelling at night, on a Sunday or on a public holiday, check the next bus in the BA Cómo Llego app before you leave.

What changed in Retiro since 2024

The structure of the line has not changed: it still has branches A and B. What changed with Resolution 801/2024 (Boletín Oficial, 28/08/2024) is the Retiro end. Previously the A started at Av. Ramón Castillo and Mayor Luisoni, and the B was listed as “Estación Retiro (Línea Mitre)”. Now both start and end inside the Retiro Bus Terminal and use more sections of the Metrobús del Bajo, also on Paseo Colón. On the return trip, from Barracas they run along Defensa and Av. Brasil before joining the Metrobús.

In May 2024 the line ran temporary services to Plaza Constitución because of works on the Roca train line. They were provisional and ended when the works did, so you can ignore them.

Main stops and connections

In Retiro the 22 leaves from the Bus Terminal, near the Mitre, San Martín and Belgrano Norte train stations and subte (metro) line C. In the Bajo it passes Rivadavia and Bolívar, next to Plaza de Mayo, where subte lines A, D and E stop. In the south, Bernal and Quilmes stations on the Roca line are on the route.

Strikes, complaints and operator

The 22 is run by Línea 22 S.A., holder of the permit for this national line. In addition to the general UTA strikes, it has had its own industrial action over late wage payments: on 5 September 2025 the drivers stopped work from midnight, and on 8 May 2026 there was another strike that was called off once wages were paid. If you are searching for “línea 22 paro” or “colectivo 22 hoy” (line 22 strike / bus 22 today), check the day’s news before you leave. To complain about frequency, a bus that did not stop or poor service, the official channel is the CNRT: 0800-333-0300 or the form at control.cnrt.gob.ar. Have the line, branch, time and, if possible, the vehicle number to hand.

Tips for riding bus 22

  • In Retiro, catch it inside the Bus Terminal: it has been its terminus since 2024.
  • If you are going beyond Quilmes station, towards Av. Centenario, only board the 22A.
  • To change to the Roca train you can get off at Bernal or Quilmes.
  • Use a registered SUBE card: unregistered, you pay double.
