Route 506 is the bus (locally called a “micro”) that links Maipú with Peñalolén, crossing Santiago south of the centre without going along the Alameda. It is 36.9 km long and is a Red Movilidad service, the system formerly known as Transantiago, run by Metbus. It is one of the most used services in the city: in the 2025 ranking published by Red it came second, with an average of 28,584 transactions per weekday between January and November, and its 506v variant came ninth, with 19,074. Route 506: from Maipú to Peñalolén
Maipú. The 506 starts at Avenida Portales and La Galaxia, passes the Liceo Nacional Maipú and runs along Avenida 4 Poniente, René Olivares, Av. Alfredo Silva Carvallo and Los Diamantes to Av. Nueva San Martín. From there it takes Av. Los Pajaritos, with stops at Plaza de Maipú and the Santiago Bueras, Del Sol and Monte Tabor stations, up to Paradero 10 de Pajaritos.
Las Parcelas and 5 de Abril. Via Av. Las Parcelas, Sur de Chile and Santa Corina it reaches Avenida 5 de Abril, which it follows eastwards, crossing Av. Aeropuerto, Las Rejas and General Amengual. It then continues along Arica and Blanco (Molina, Avenida España) to the Escuela de Ingeniería and Plaza Ercilla.
Parque O’Higgins and Av. Matta. It passes Parque O’Higgins station and takes Avenida Matta eastwards: Nataniel Cox, San Diego, Matta station, Carmen and Avenida Portugal, up to Irarrázaval station.
Estadio Nacional and Av. Grecia. It continues past the Conjunto Empart Ñuñoa, Villa Olímpica and Avenida Marathon to Estadio Nacional station, the Pedagógico and the Centro Olímpico Marlene Ahrens. At Grecia station it takes Avenida Grecia eastwards, crosses Tobalaba and Av. Consistorial, passes the Municipalidad de Peñalolén and ends at Av. Diagonal Las Torres and Álvaro Casanova. The return trip uses the same axis, with some street changes in Maipú (via Nueva O’Higgins and Santa Elena) and on Blanco (via Bascuñán).
506 services and variants
The 506v is a variant that starts at Villa El Abrazo, at Quilín and Constitución. It runs along Av. 4 Poniente, Camino a Melipilla and Av. 3 Poniente, and joins the 506 route on Av. Alfredo Silva Carvallo; from there it follows the same path to Peñalolén. It is 34.5 km long, its scheduled time is 123 minutes and it runs every day from 05:30 to 24:00, with about 111 departures on weekdays and a minimum interval of 6 minutes in peak hours.
The 506e is the Maipú – Peñalolén express. It covers the same corridor with about 46 outbound stops (against 91 on the 506): Plaza de Maipú, Del Sol, Monte Tabor, Av. 5 de Abril, Parque O’Higgins, Matta, Irarrázaval, Estadio Nacional and Av. Grecia, among others. It is 32.9 km long, has 95 scheduled minutes and runs Monday to Friday only, from 05:30 to 22:00, with about 40 departures.
Route 506 timetable
According to the current DTPM operating schedule (October 2026), the 506 runs 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday, with about 138 departures on weekdays, 100 on Saturday and 89 on Sunday. In the early hours the frequency is lower than during the day. The 506v does not run between midnight and 05:30, and the 506e does not run at weekends.
In the morning peak (07:00 to 09:00) on a weekday, the shortest scheduled interval is 5 minutes on the 506, 6 minutes on the 506v and 11 minutes on the 506e.
How long the 506 takes
According to the operating schedule, a full outbound trip on the 506, from Maipú to Peñalolén, has a scheduled time of 124 minutes for 36.9 km. The 506e express cuts that to 95 minutes by skipping stops, and the 506v has 123 minutes. These are times without incidents: allow extra time in peak hours.
Bus stops and Metro connections
The 506 has 91 stops outbound and 92 on the return. It passes nine Metro stations: Plaza de Maipú, Santiago Bueras, Del Sol and Monte Tabor in Maipú; Parque O’Higgins, Matta and Irarrázaval on the central stretch; and Estadio Nacional and Grecia towards the east. It is useful for crossing from west to east and transferring to the Metro without going along the Alameda.

How to find out where the 506 bus is
To see how long until the next 506, use the App Red (in the app stores, “Red Metropolitana de Movilidad”), which is free and has an arrival predictor for each bus stop (paradero). You can also use “¿Cuándo llega?” on red.cl. Enter the bus stop code, which is printed on the stop sign: it starts with P, followed by a zone letter and a number. Check which service it shows you: the 506, 506e and 506v share many bus stops.
Fare and tarjeta bip!
Since 22 February 2026 the adult fare on Red buses is CLP 795 at any time, including on the 506e express. Secondary and higher-education students pay CLP 260 with the TNE, primary school pupils ride free and seniors with the bip! Adulto Mayor pay CLP 390. You can pay with the tarjeta bip! (it costs CLP 1,550) or with bip!QR from the App Red and other apps.
A single payment covers up to two transfers (three legs) within 120 minutes of the first validation, as long as you do not repeat the same bus route. There is no extra charge between buses; if you transfer from the 506 to the Metro during peak hours, you pay the difference up to CLP 895.
Tips for travelling on the 506
- On weekdays, for the full Maipú – Peñalolén trip, the 506e is scheduled almost half an hour faster than the 506.
- If you live near Quilín or Av. 4 Poniente, the 506v takes you onto the same corridor without a transfer.
- Read the whole sign: the three services share bus stops, but the 506e skips many of them.
- At night only the regular 506 runs: check in the App Red how long the wait is before you leave.
