Chile public holidays 2027 add up to 17 national days off: ten fall on a weekday and create nine long weekends, from Friday 1 January to the weekend of Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November.
This guide gives you the full calendar with weekdays and the law behind each date, the long weekends, the days when shops must close and the two regional holidays. Every date was calculated from the current text of the laws published by Chile’s Library of Congress (Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional), checked in October 2026.

Long weekends in Chile in 2027
Chile has nine three-day long weekends in 2027, and no extra bridge holiday has been declared so far. Six of them start with a Friday holiday and three end with a Monday holiday.
| Long weekend | Days | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January | 3 | New Year |
| Friday 26 to Sunday 28 March | 3 | Holy Week |
| Friday 21 to Sunday 23 May | 3 | Navy Day |
| Saturday 19 to Monday 21 June | 3 | Indigenous Peoples Day |
| Saturday 26 to Monday 28 June | 3 | Saint Peter and Saint Paul |
| Friday 16 to Sunday 18 July | 3 | Our Lady of Mount Carmel |
| Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September | 3 | Fiestas Patrias |
| Saturday 9 to Monday 11 October | 3 | Meeting of Two Worlds |
| Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November | 3 | Evangelical Churches Day and All Saints |
June 2027 brings two long weekends in a row, because the winter solstice falls on a Monday and Saint Peter and Saint Paul moves to the following Monday. Wednesday 8 December stands alone midweek and creates no long weekend.
Rules that move Chile public holidays 2027
Three legal rules explain why some Chile public holidays 2027 fall away from their traditional date: the Monday rule, the extra Fiestas Patrias day and the winter solstice.
The Monday rule
Law 19,668 moves Saint Peter and Saint Paul (29 June) and the Meeting of Two Worlds (12 October) to the Monday of the same week when they fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and to the following Monday when they fall on a Friday. Both dates fall on a Tuesday in 2027, so they are observed on Monday 28 June and Monday 11 October, as set out in the text of Law 19,668.
The Evangelical and Protestant Churches Day has its own rule under Law 20,299: a Wednesday 31 October moves to that Friday, and a Tuesday 31 October moves to the previous Friday. In 2027 the date is a Sunday, so the holiday stays put.
Every other date is fixed and is observed even on a weekend, which is why 1 May, 15 August and 25 December 2027 bring no extra day off.
Fiestas Patrias 2027: why Friday 17 September is a holiday
Friday 17 September 2027 is a public holiday because 18 and 19 September fall on a Saturday and Sunday, and Law 20,983 adds Friday 17 whenever that happens. The result is a three-day Fiestas Patrias weekend, from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September.
The same law makes Monday 2 January a holiday when 1 January is a Sunday, which does not apply in 2027 because New Year’s Day is a Friday. A separate rule in the Labour Code (article 35 ter) adds 17 or 20 September only when the national days fall midweek, which is also not the case in 2027.
Indigenous Peoples Day: why it falls on 21 June 2027
The National Day of Indigenous Peoples falls on Monday 21 June 2027, because Law 21,357 places it on the day of the southern hemisphere winter solstice. In 2027 the solstice occurs on 21 June at 10:11 mainland Chile time.
The date changes every year with the astronomical calendar and can be 20 or 21 June. The law does not allow it to be moved, so the Monday in 2027 is a calendar coincidence.
Holidays when shops must close in 2027
Chile’s mandatory closing days in 2027 are 1 January, 1 May, 18 and 19 September and 25 December, when retail employees must get the day off under article 2 of Law 19,973. Locals call them “feriados irrenunciables”.
The law exempts restaurants, clubs, cinemas, live shows, casinos, airport shops, petrol stations and on-duty pharmacies. For a visitor, this means supermarkets, most shops and shopping malls are closed on Friday 1 January and Saturday 25 December 2027, so buy groceries the day before.
Four of the five closing days fall on a weekend in 2027. Only New Year’s Day falls on a weekday.
Election days
Chilean law also makes the day of a national election or referendum a public holiday. No regular elections are on the calendar for 2027; if a national vote were called, that Sunday would be a holiday.
Regional holidays in 2027
Two more holidays apply only in part of the country, and both create a local long weekend in 2027. Monday 7 June is a holiday in the Arica y Parinacota Region (Law 20,663), and Friday 20 August is a holiday in the municipalities of Chillán and Chillán Viejo (Law 20,768).
| Date 2027 | Regional holiday | Where | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday 7 June | Assault and Capture of the Morro de Arica | Arica y Parinacota Region | Law 20,663 |
| Friday 20 August | Birth of Bernardo O’Higgins | Chillán and Chillán Viejo | Law 20,768 |
If you are in Arica in early June, shops and public offices keep holiday hours that Monday, while Santiago works as usual.
Getting around Santiago on public holidays
Santiago’s Red buses run on public holidays, including the mandatory closing days, because bus drivers are not retail workers, according to a 2016 ruling by Chile’s Labour Directorate. Service is usually thinner than on a working day, and each route keeps its own timetable.
Before heading out, check how often your bus runs in our guide to Santiago’s Red bus routes, which lists departures for weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. For the underground, see our guide to Santiago Metro hours, and before a long weekend learn how to top up the bip card.
Public offices, notaries and banks are closed on public holidays. On 31 December banks also close for the bank holiday, even though shops open.
How to make the most of the 2027 long weekends
The simplest way to stretch your time off in 2027 is to add one or two days of leave next to a stand-alone holiday. A few useful combinations:
- December: take Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 December to get five days off in a row, from Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8.
- June: with two Monday holidays (21 and 28), taking Tuesday 22 to Friday 25 June gives you ten days in a row, from Saturday 19 to Monday 28 June.
- Fiestas Patrias: Friday 17 is already a holiday; add Monday 20 September for a four-day break.
- Holy Week: take Thursday 25 March for four days in a row.
Long-distance buses and flights fill up on long weekends, especially at Fiestas Patrias and Easter, so book early. If your trip continues across the border, compare Chile public holidays 2027 with the Argentina public holidays 2027 and the Peru public holidays 2027, which follow different dates.
Frequently asked questions
How many public holidays does Chile have in 2027?
Chile has 17 national public holidays in 2027, including Friday 17 September, which Law 20,983 adds because 18 and 19 September fall on a weekend. How many long weekends are there in Chile in 2027?
There are nine long weekends in Chile in 2027, all of three days. They fall at New Year, Easter, 21 May, the two June Mondays (21 and 28), Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Fiestas Patrias, 11 October and from 30 October to 1 November. No bridge holidays have been declared for 2027 so far.
When are the Fiestas Patrias in 2027?
Fiestas Patrias 2027 run from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September. Independence Day (18 September) falls on a Saturday and Army Day (19 September) on a Sunday, so Law 20,983 makes Friday 17 an extra public holiday. Shops close on 18 and 19 September by law.
When is Easter 2027 in Chile?
Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March. Good Friday (26 March) and Holy Saturday (27 March) are public holidays in Chile, which gives a three-day weekend. Maundy Thursday, 25 March, is a normal working day, so take it as leave if you want four days off.

Does public transport run on holidays in Santiago?
Yes, Santiago’s Red buses run on public holidays, including the mandatory closing days such as Christmas and New Year’s Day, because the shop-closing law does not cover transport workers. Service is usually reduced compared with a weekday, and each route keeps its own timetable, so check the frequency of your route before you travel.
