Mexico public holidays 2027 under the Federal Labor Law are eight mandatory rest days: seven fixed or Monday-moved dates plus the election day on Sunday 6 June 2027.
This guide gives you the full calendar with weekdays and legal basis, the long weekends (“puentes”) of 2027, the dates Mexicans celebrate that are not legal rest days (Holy Week, Day of the Dead, 12 December) and how the SEP school calendar differs. Data checked on 8 October 2026 against the current text of the law published by the Chamber of Deputies (last amendment DOF 14 May 2026), the INE electoral authority and the Ministry of Public Education (SEP).
Mexico public holidays 2027: the official calendar
Mexico’s mandatory rest days for 2027 are set by Article 74 of the Ley Federal del Trabajo (Federal Labor Law): three fall on a Monday, one on a Friday, one on a Thursday, two on a Saturday and one on a Sunday.
| Date 2027 | Holiday | Type | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday 1 January | New Year’s Day | Mandatory rest day | LFT art. 74, section I |
| Monday 1 February | Constitution Day (5 February) | Mandatory, moved to Monday | LFT art. 74, section II |
| Monday 15 March | Benito Juárez’s birthday (21 March) | Mandatory, moved to Monday | LFT art. 74, section III |
| Saturday 1 May | Labour Day | Mandatory rest day | LFT art. 74, section IV |
| Sunday 6 June | Federal and state election day | Mandatory rest day | LFT art. 74, section IX |
| Thursday 16 September | Independence Day | Mandatory rest day | LFT art. 74, section V |
| Monday 15 November | Revolution Day (20 November) | Mandatory, moved to Monday | LFT art. 74, section VI |
| Saturday 25 December | Christmas Day | Mandatory rest day | LFT art. 74, section VIII |
Section VII of the article (1 October, when a new president takes office) does not apply in 2027. It only applies every six years, and the next handover is in 2030.
Why three holidays move to Monday
Three of the Mexico public holidays 2027 move to Monday because the law defines them as “the first Monday of February”, “the third Monday of March” and “the third Monday of November”. In 2027 the days off are Monday 1 February, Monday 15 March and Monday 15 November, while the historical dates fall on Friday 5 February, Sunday 21 March and Saturday 20 November.
Weekend holidays are not moved
Labour Day (Saturday 1 May) and Christmas (Saturday 25 December) stay on Saturday in 2027. The law fixes those dates literally, so people on a Monday-to-Friday schedule do not get an extra day off. Anyone who normally works Saturdays still gets the rest day.
Election day: Sunday 6 June 2027
Sunday 6 June 2027 is a mandatory rest day because Mexico votes that day, and section IX of Article 74 covers the election day set by federal and state electoral laws.
The National Electoral Institute (INE) confirms the vote on 6 June 2027. All 500 seats of the federal Chamber of Deputies are up, together with state governorships, state congresses and municipal governments. Because it is a Sunday, the rule matters mostly for people who work on Sundays.
Working on a holiday: the pay rule
If you work on a mandatory rest day in Mexico, Article 75 of the Federal Labor Law says you receive your normal pay for that day plus double pay for the work done. In practice, the day pays three times a normal day’s wage.
Employers and workers agree on how many people need to work on these days; if they cannot agree, the labour court decides. The rule covers all eight dates in the table, including the election Sunday. For expats on a Mexican payroll, the same rule applies as for local staff.
Dates that are not official holidays
Holy Week, the Day of the Dead and 12 December are not Mexico public holidays 2027 under the law: they are celebrated nationwide, but whether you get the day off depends on your contract, your employer or your local government.
| Date 2027 | Celebration | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday 6 January | Three Kings Day | Working day; SEP schools closed |
| Tuesday 2 February | Candlemas (Candelaria) | Working day |
| Wednesday 24 February | Flag Day | Working day, civic date |
| Thursday 25 March | Holy Thursday | Not a legal rest day |
| Friday 26 March | Good Friday | Not a legal rest day |
| Sunday 28 March | Easter Sunday | Sunday |
| Wednesday 5 May | Battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo) | Working day; SEP schools closed |
| Monday 10 May | Mother’s Day | Working day |
| Wednesday 15 September | Independence Eve (“El Grito”) | Working day |
| Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 November | Day of the Dead | Not legal rest days |
| Sunday 12 December | Our Lady of Guadalupe | Sunday |
| Friday 24 and 31 December | Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve | Working days |
Holy Week 2027
Holy Week (“Semana Santa”) 2027 runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March, with Holy Thursday on 25 March and Good Friday on 26 March. Many government offices and companies close on those two days, but they are not listed in Article 74. Expect busy airports, bus terminals and beach towns that week.
Long weekends in 2027
Of the Mexico public holidays 2027, four create three-day weekends by law: New Year, Constitution Day, Benito Juárez Day and Revolution Day. Holy Week becomes a four-day weekend only if your employer gives Thursday and Friday.
| Long weekend | Dates | Length | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year | Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January | 3 days | By law |
| Constitution Day | Saturday 30 January to Monday 1 February | 3 days | By law |
| Benito Juárez Day | Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March | 3 days | By law |
| Holy Week | Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 March | 4 days | If your employer closes |
| Independence Day | Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 September | 4 days | Only if you get Friday 17 off |
| Revolution Day | Saturday 13 to Monday 15 November | 3 days | By law |
March is the busiest month for domestic travel: the 15 March long weekend and Holy Week are only one week apart, and the school spring break starts on Monday 22 March. If you are in the capital those days, check the Mexico City Metro hours, which change on Sundays and holidays.
SEP school calendar 2026-2027
The SEP school calendar is separate from the Mexico public holidays 2027 set by the Federal Labor Law: it adds school-free days that are normal working days for adults and sets its own holidays.
According to the SEP, the 2026-2027 year for basic education started on 31 August 2026 and ends on Friday 9 July 2027. The 2027 dates that matter for families are:
- Winter break: 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027.
- No-class days: 1 and 6 January, 1 February, 15 March and 5 May 2027.
- Spring break: Monday 22 March to Saturday 3 April 2027.
Some states adjust the calendar with approval from their education authority, so check your state’s version if you have children in a Mexican school.
Banks and paperwork on Mexico public holidays 2027
Bank closing days are set each year by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), and the 2027 list has not been published as of October 2026. The CNBV usually publishes it in the Official Gazette in December; the 2026 list came out on 10 December 2025 and is on its official calendar page.
Until the list is out, keep important bank visits for regular working days. For day-to-day spending, card payments and transfers keep working on holidays; our guide to payment methods in Mexico explains the main options.
Planning tips for 2027
Planning around the Mexico public holidays 2027 helps you use fewer vacation days and avoid the most expensive travel dates.
- Combine 15 March with Holy Week. From Saturday 13 to Sunday 28 March there are two long weekends; taking the working days in between gives you more than two weeks off.
- Take Friday 17 September. One vacation day turns Independence Day into a four-day weekend.
- Book early for November. Monday 15 November comes two weeks after the Day of the Dead (1 and 2 November), and popular destinations fill up for both.
- Check your contract. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, 12 December and 24 December depend on your employer.

Frequently asked questions
How many public holidays does Mexico have in 2027?
Mexico has eight mandatory rest days in 2027 under Article 74 of the Federal Labor Law: 1 January, 1 February, 15 March, 1 May, 6 June (election day), 16 September, 15 November and 25 December. The 1 October holiday does not apply because the next presidential handover is in 2030.
Are Holy Thursday and Good Friday holidays in Mexico in 2027?
They are not mandatory rest days under the law. In 2027 they fall on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 March. Many companies and government offices close, and schools are already on spring break, but your day off depends on your contract or employer. If you work, it is paid as a normal day.
What are the long weekends in Mexico in 2027?
The law creates four three-day weekends in 2027: 1 to 3 January, 30 January to 1 February, 13 to 15 March and 13 to 15 November. Holy Week (25 to 28 March) and Independence Day (16 to 19 September) become long weekends only if you also get the working days in between.
Is the Day of the Dead a public holiday in Mexico?
The Day of the Dead is not a mandatory rest day under the Federal Labor Law. In 2027 it falls on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 November, so both are working days unless your employer or local government gives them off. Celebrations, altars and cemetery visits still take place across the country.
How much do you get paid for working on a public holiday in Mexico?
Under Article 75 of the Federal Labor Law, if you work on a mandatory rest day you get your normal pay for that day plus double pay for the work done. In total, the day pays three times your usual daily wage. The rule applies to all eight dates, including Sunday 6 June 2027.
Is 6 June 2027 a holiday in Mexico?
Yes. Sunday 6 June 2027 is federal and state election day, and section IX of Article 74 of the Federal Labor Law makes it a mandatory rest day. Because it falls on a Sunday, it matters mainly for people who normally work that day: they are entitled to the day off or the extra double pay.
When is the 2027 spring break in Mexican schools?
The spring break in the SEP 2026-2027 calendar runs from Monday 22 March to Saturday 3 April 2027, according to the Ministry of Public Education. It covers Holy Week, which in 2027 runs from 21 to 28 March. Some states may adjust their local school calendar.
