The euro opens on September 1 in Bolivia trading at 13.73 bolivianos, reflecting a 1.98% increase from the previous closing price of 13.46 bolivianos. This positive trend follows a week in which the European currency registered a gain of 3.77% and a remarkable year-on-year increase of 74.05%.
In recent days, the euro has shown stability in its value against the boliviano after a period of volatility. Currently, the exchange rate volatility stands at 21.05%, significantly lower than the benchmark index of 41%, which may indicate a phase of stability in the exchange market.
Looking ahead to 2026, the parallel market in Bolivia experienced temporary stability, with rates around 9.64 bolivianos, linked to expectations generated by currency reforms and external financing of $4.500 million from the IDB for the 2026-2028 period. The Bolivian government aims to reduce the fiscal deficit to 7% and projects inflation of up to 17%. However, the IMF has warned that inflation could exceed 15% if monetary emission is not controlled, creating uncertainty.
The World Bank predicts a recession of -1.1% in Bolivia’s GDP for 2026, while ECLAC anticipates marginal growth of 0.5%. The IMF has not provided long-term estimates due to the high degree of uncertainty facing the country. The currency unification process in the first half of the year includes the gradual release of dollars into the financial system and the daily publication of reference values by the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB), which currently stands around 9.21 bolivianos for buying and 9.40 bolivianos for selling.
Despite the official exchange rate remaining at 6.96 bolivianos, its use has declined compared to the new market values. Following the high volatility of 2025, Bolivia faces the challenge of structural transition in the context of economic contraction.
