Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula in his left leg during a match in the Greek Super League between Olympiacos and Volos. The injury occurred near halftime and required his transportation by ambulance to a medical center in Athens.
The incident took place in the 43rd minute of the first half when El Kaabi contested a 50-50 ball in the opposing area. In the process, his left leg collided with Volos goalkeeper Marios Siampanis, causing a twist that immediately raised concerns among the players and necessitated medical assistance on the field. The action halted the match for several minutes.
The player’s scream of pain shocked those present in the stadium, including teammates and opponents. After receiving assistance, El Kaabi was evacuated on a stretcher to the applause of the fans. Subsequently, medical examinations confirmed the complete fracture of the tibia and fibula.
The club reported that El Kaabi was successfully operated on Sunday at the Medical Center of Athens, and will now begin the initial stage of his rehabilitation. The surgery was conducted by Olympiacos’ chief medical officer, Christos Theos, and the postoperative progress is as expected. The duration of recovery will depend on bone healing and how the player responds when resuming physical activity.
Marios Siampanis, the goalkeeper involved in the play, expressed on his social media: “I had no intention of hurting you, and it was very painful to see you suffer in this way. My thoughts are with you. I wish you strength and a full recovery.” Olympiacos also offered words of support to El Kaabi, highlighting his importance to the team after being the top scorer in the previous campaign.
El Kaabi’s absence will force coach José Luis Mendilibar to alter the team’s planning for the season.
