Most Colombians agree that James Rodríguez should not return to the Colombia national team following their elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Sports experts argue that a renewal process is necessary for the national team.

Colombia’s elimination against Switzerland in the aforementioned tournament has highlighted the need for change within the team, starting with Rodríguez, who is considered by many to be the best player in the history of the national team. Since Néstor Lorenzo took over as coach, 74 players have been called up, 31 of whom made their debut under his leadership.

James Rodríguez is the player with the most appearances in Lorenzo’s era, with 38 caps and the highest number of offensive contributions, totaling 7 goals and 14 assists. However, Paulo César Cortés, known as “Corbatín,” maintains that his cycle has come to an end. In an interview, he stated: “James has already completed a cycle. We will miss him, just like we did with ‘Pibe’ Valderrama after the 1998 World Cup.”

Cortés added that his presence has begun to tarnish the coach’s image due to the criticisms surrounding Rodríguez’s call-up. Santiago Saray, commentator for Gol Caracol, also criticized James’s poor performance in the World Cup, stating that “Colombia practically played with one less” when he was on the field.

Although Rodríguez’s departure might evoke a sense of nostalgia among fans, experts agree it will not affect the media coverage of the national team’s matches. Saray also mentioned that Colombian passion for the team does not depend on the presence of historic players.

The absence of Rodríguez could have a tactical impact on the team. Federico Poveda, a coach and technical assistant, suggested that changes in formation could be implemented, focusing on the speed of modern football. While recognizing Rodríguez’s skills, he said: “The best should be in the national team.”

The exit of a player who has been a key figure for the team may be difficult, but according to Poveda, other players like Luis Díaz and Davinson Sánchez can assume important roles. Regarding possible substitutes, he mentioned Carlos Andrés Gómez as an option that fits the demands of today’s game.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding James Rodríguez’s future in the national team, experts and fans seem to agree that it is time to look ahead and build a new competitive team.
