Franco Colapinto showed emotion after finishing the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, where a mistake cost him a better position.
The Argentine driver from Alpine, after lamenting his performance in the race, apologized multiple times to his engineer, Stuart Barlow, for going off track and dropping to 16th place. Despite the setback, Colapinto made a remarkable comeback and finished in ninth place, earning two points for the championship.
Colapinto started the race from seventh position and after the restart due to an accident involving Charles Leclerc, climbed up to third place in the competition. However, in an attempt to maintain his position, he lost control of the car and went off track, causing him to drop back down to 16th. Following this incident, the Argentine driver mounted a fierce recovery, overtaking several competitors like Oliver Bearman (Haas) and Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) to reach the points zone.
Immediately after the race, Colapinto reached out to Barlow, expressing his disappointment. “Sorry Stu, I’m really disappointed with myself,” he said. However, Barlow reminded him that the final result was positive. “You finished P9 with incredible driving today… we came back to P9, you almost finished in P8,” the engineer emphasized, highlighting the magnitude of his recovery.
Although Colapinto apologized again, Barlow urged him to focus on the future. “Let’s concentrate on the next race,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of the points scored and the return to Q3 qualifying. His final message was one of encouragement: “I think you can be very proud of this comeback; we are here.” The race was won by Kimi Antonelli, with George Russell and Max Verstappen completing the podium. The next event on the calendar will be the Spanish Grand Prix at the new semi-permanent track called Madring.
