The Argentine delegation has increased its medal count to 160 during the eighth day of the Santa Fe 2026 South American Games, securing second place in the overall medal standings.
Argentina took home 20 medals yesterday, achieving five gold, three silver, and 12 bronze at the venues in Santa Fe, Rosario, and Rafaela. This result places the national team behind Brazil in the rankings.
A standout victory was that of the women’s handball team, which crowned itself champion of the South American tournament by tying 25-25 with Paraguay on the final day of the final phase, thereby securing the gold medal and qualifying for the Pan American Games in Lima 2027.
The aquatic disciplines also contributed to the local medal tally, bringing in four gold medals. In water skiing and wakeboarding, Tobías Giorgis, Ulf Ditsch, and Eugenia de Armas won gold in their respective events. Additionally, Kayi Ditsch and the duo of Bautista Ahumada Cirrincione and Antonio María Collazo took home silver, while Violeta Mociulsky, Francisco Giorgis, and Victoria de Armas achieved bronze.
In sailing, Lucía Falasca was crowned champion in the ILCA 6 class, while Florencia Galimberti and Luciano Pesci added a silver in Mixed Snipe, and Chiara Ferretti, Joaquín Reutemann, Martín Alsogaray, and Francisco Guaragna Rigonat secured four bronzes.
On another note, shooting sports provided a remarkable double podium with Alexis Eberhardt and Marcelo Zoccali in the Three-Position Rifle event. Equestrian also added two silvers with Juan Alberto Benítez Gallardo and the team in the eventing competition.
In combat sports, Camila Amarilla and the mixed judo team won bronze, as did Celeste D’arcangelo in rhythmic gymnastics. However, weather alerts caused the suspension of events intended to take place in the Fan Fests of the host cities, as well as Rugby 7 and football competitions that were rescheduled for Monday.
With activities concluding on September 20, Argentina has reached a total of 160 medals, surpassing its performance at Cochabamba 2018, which was 42 gold medals. Meanwhile, Brazil leads the medal tally with 177 medals, followed by Colombia in third place.
