Here is how to retweet on X today: tap the two-arrow Repost icon under a post and choose Repost to share it unchanged with your followers, or choose the quote option to add your own comment on top.

What a retweet is and why X now calls it a Repost
A retweet is a post you share with all of your followers, and since 2023 X calls it a Repost instead of a Retweet. The feature itself did not change: the original post shows up on your profile and in your followers’ timelines, labelled as reposted by you.
The new name arrived with the switch from Twitter to X. X’s Help Center already titled its guide “How to RePost” in September 2023, and today the official How to Repost page uses only the new wording. Many people still search for how to retweet, so both terms point to the same button.
You can repost posts from other people and your own. X suggests it for bringing back an older post that is relevant again, or for making sure all of your followers see a reply you posted inside another conversation.
Typing “RT” at the start of a post is a habit from the early Twitter years, but X states that it is not an official command or feature. A hand-typed RT is an ordinary post and does not count as a Repost.
How to retweet on X step by step
How to retweet on X comes down to two taps or clicks on the post you want to share:
- Open the post. Find it in your timeline, on a profile or in search results. On the web, hovering over the post is enough.
- Tap the Repost icon. It is the two-arrow icon below the post, next to the reply and Like icons.
- Choose Repost in the pop-up. On the web, a preview of the post appears before you confirm.
- Check the result. The icon turns highlighted and the post is shared with all of your followers as a Repost.
The steps are almost identical on every platform. Only the way you open the menu differs:

If the post links to an article you have not opened recently, X may ask whether you want to read it before reposting. It is only a prompt: you can open the article or repost without opening it.
How to quote a post: a repost with your comment
A Quote is a repost with your own comment on top, and you make it the same way you learned how to retweet, starting from the two-arrow icon but choosing the quote option instead of Repost. X’s Help Center calls this option “Repost as Quote”.
After choosing it, type your comment and, if you like, add media: one GIF, up to four photos or a video. Then tap Repost and the Quote is published on your profile.
Two details matter. The original post embedded in your Quote does not count towards your character limit. And when someone replies to your Quote, the original author is not added to the conversation automatically; mention their username if you want to include them.
Use a Quote when context matters: to say where a claim comes from, to correct something or to explain why you recommend it. For a simple share, a plain Repost is enough.
Repost vs Quote vs Bookmark
Repost, Quote and Bookmark are three ways of keeping a post: the first two show it to your followers and the third saves it only for you. The table sums up what X’s Help Center confirms:

Bookmarks are private, according to X’s About Bookmarks page: nobody else can see which posts you saved.
How to undo a repost or delete a quote
To undo a repost, find the post (the Repost icon is highlighted), tap the icon and confirm with Undo Repost. The post is removed from your profile timeline and from your followers’ timelines, and the original post is not deleted.
X warns that an undone repost may still appear for a while on phones showing cached timelines, or on third-party sites that cross-posted it.
A Quote is deleted like any of your own posts: go to your profile, find the Quote, tap the icon at the top of the post, choose Delete Post and confirm with Delete.
Your repost also disappears if the author deletes the original post, if X removes it, or if the author’s account is deleted or suspended.
Protected accounts, limits and who sees your reposts
Posts from a protected account (the ones with a lock icon next to the name) cannot be reposted, even if you follow that account and see its posts in your timeline. The author chose not to share them publicly, so the Repost icon does not work on them.
The reverse case works: if your own posts are protected, you can still repost and quote, but only the followers you approved will see those reposts. The main rules, from X’s Repost FAQs:
- A public post can be reposted an unlimited number of times.
- Reposts count towards your account’s daily posting limit.
- You do not see reposts or quotes from accounts you have blocked.
- You can stop seeing one account’s reposts with Turn off Reposts on its profile, but you cannot turn off all reposts from all accounts at once.
How to see who reposted your post
To see who reposted your post, open it and tap the Reposts tab on the post detail page; quotes are listed separately under the Quote posts tab. Your Notifications tab also shows which of your posts were recently reposted and by whom.
X shows at most the 100 most recent people who reposted any public post. If your post got more reposts, you will see the total count but not the full list of accounts.
How to retweet responsibly
Knowing how to retweet is the easy part; before you repost news, an alert or an offer, check that it comes from the official account and that the information is still current. A repost cannot be edited later: if the facts change, your only option is to undo it.
Service alerts deserve extra care. If you get around Buenos Aires by colectivo (city bus) or Santiago on Red buses, compare any shared detour or disruption notice with the original source before forwarding it to friends.
Not everything gets shared inside X. If you often send posts to the same people by message, this trick to keep your most important WhatsApp contacts within reach saves time.

Is retweeting the same as reposting?
