Lee Torrens decided to leave Australia at the age of 24 in search of new horizons and embarked on a journey that took him to Argentina. His quality of life improved, and today he shares his adaptation experience in a different country.
With a background that includes time in London and a career in technology, Lee worked at one of the world’s most successful startups, Canva. However, he felt the need for a change and, after meeting an Argentine woman in Rome, chose to move to Argentina, where he found a lower cost of living than in Australia. He claims that his departure was not a significant break, as his family views his decision to explore the world as completely natural.
Upon arriving in Argentina, Lee felt welcomed by the kindness and warmth of Argentinians, although he also noticed that his presence generated curiosity. He acknowledged that, unlike his experience in London, he did not need to seek out an expatriate community. He quickly integrated into the local culture, especially after starting a family with an Argentine.
Lee reflects on the cultural differences. In Australia, adherence to rules is strictly observed, while in Argentina a different approach to social behavior is perceived. Although he sometimes struggles to adapt, he admires the flexibility of Argentinians in these aspects.
When he arrived in Argentina, Lee did not speak Spanish and decided to create his own career path, focusing on web design and stock photography. Through his blog, he was contacted by Canva and worked there for seven years, from the initial stages to the company’s growth.
After a period of burnout at Canva, Lee decided to take a sabbatical after selling part of his shares. During that time, he became a vegan and, without intending to start a business, began a personal project that led him to venture into the food industry in a country known for its carnivorous culinary culture.
