Captain Luis Horna has presented the national team that will compete in the 2026 Davis Cup playoff against Paraguay. The presentation took place at the Jockey Club del Perú, in Santiago de Surco, which will host the matches. The lineup includes Ignacio Buse, Juan Pablo Varillas, Gonzalo Bueno, Arklon Huertas del Pino, and Alexander Merino.
The series will determine direct qualification for the 2027 Qualifiers, and tickets are already sold out. The draw for the matchups will take place in the coming days. This year is noteworthy for Peruvian tennis, as for the first time since 1994, there are three players in the Top 200 of the ATP rankings simultaneously: Buse at 35, Bueno at 172, and Varillas at 190.
Horna, a former standout tennis player, expressed his enthusiasm during the presentation, stating: “This will undoubtedly be the best generation of Peruvian tennis in history.” He also drew a comparison with the golden era of his own generation, asserting that this team can achieve joys equal to or greater than those of 2007, when Peru had an outstanding performance in the Davis Cup.
Ignacio “Nacho” Buse, the team’s standout player, is experiencing the best moment of his career. At 23 years old, he has won the ATP 500 in Hamburg and the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem in 2026 and has competed in the US Open. His popularity has grown significantly, and he himself stated: “When I’m abroad, I try to mention Peru, which is the most important.” Buse has set a clear goal for the team: “We have every hope of advancing this series and placing Peru on the world map.”
The matches will be played on outdoor clay courts at the Jockey Club del Perú. The first day will be on Friday, September 18 at 4 p.m., and on Saturday, the 19th, it will begin at 2 p.m. The Paraguayan delegation is already in Lima starting their preparation for the playoff. Television broadcasting has not been officially confirmed, although it is speculated that TV Perú could once again be in charge of the coverage.
With all tickets sold, a full house is expected, ensuring a great atmosphere in what is considered one of the most important series of Peruvian tennis in years, highlighting the team’s potential to achieve historic successes.
