The best time to visit Chile depends on the region: September to November and March to May for Santiago, any month for the Atacama, December to March for Patagonia and June to September for snow.

Chile is long and narrow, so the same month can bring clear desert skies in the north, rain in the south and snow in the Andes. This guide covers the climate of each region, the ski season, the high season and a month-by-month table. Data comes from the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (DMC), Chile’s national weather service, with its 1991-2020 rainfall normals, and from the official tourism site chile.travel (checked October 2026).

Best time to visit Chile by region

The best time to visit Chile changes with the destination, because the country has a desert climate in the north, a Mediterranean climate in the centre and a rainy climate in the south, according to the chile.travel climate and weather page. The table sums up each region and why.

Region Best period Why Watch out for
Santiago and Central Chile September to November and March to May Mild temperatures, little rain Hot dry summer, cold rainy winter
Atacama Desert All year Almost no rain, clear skies Nights below 0 °C on the altiplano
Patagonia and Torres del Paine December to March Long days, snow-free trails Strong wind, rain possible any month
Lakes and volcanoes (south) December to March Mild summer Rain all year
Ski resorts June to September Snow season July and August fill up
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) January to March Warm weather, Tapati festival in February 5 h 30 flight from Santiago

Seasons are reversed for visitors from North America and Europe: summer runs from December to March and winter from June to August. A July trip means full winter in the Andes, and a January trip means peak heat in Santiago.

Santiago and Central Chile: spring and autumn

For Santiago, the best time to visit Chile is spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May), after the summer heat and before the winter rain. Chile.travel describes central Chile as having warm, dry summers from December to March and cool, rainy winters from June to August.

DMC figures back this up. According to the DMC daily climate report, the annual rainfall normal at the Quinta Normal station in Santiago is 286.3 mm (1991-2020), and about three quarters of it falls between May and August. The January to March normal adds up to only 5.9 mm, so summer in Santiago is practically dry.

Summer suits wineries, the coast at Valparaíso and Viña del Mar and long days outdoors, though Santiago afternoons are hot. In winter you can pair the city with a day trip to the snow, and the rain turns the hills green for spring.

To get around the city, Red buses and the Metro use the same card. See the Santiago bus routes and the guide on how to top up the bip card before you land.

Atacama Desert: good all year

The Atacama Desert works in any month because it barely rains: the DMC annual normal at Calama, the nearest city with an airport to San Pedro de Atacama, is 6.8 mm. What changes through the year is temperature, not rain.

According to chile.travel, the north has sunny days that often go above 20 °C and nights that can drop well below 0 °C, especially on the altiplano. Winter nights are colder still, which matters for stargazing tours. Altitude is a factor too: the site advises drinking water and resting on the first day.

Summer is the busiest time in San Pedro de Atacama, and chile.travel recommends booking ahead. If you want fewer people and milder nights, autumn and spring are the best time to visit Chile for the desert.

Flowering desert: September to November, in rainy years only

The flowering desert appears in the Atacama Region (Huasco, Vallenar, Copiapó, Caldera and nearby), far from San Pedro. According to chile.travel it only happens after 15 to 30 mm of winter rain plus enough cold; in 2026 the bloom was expected from early September, peaking in the second half of October.

Patagonia and Torres del Paine: southern summer

For Patagonia, the best time to visit Chile is December to March, when days are long and the Torres del Paine trails are free of snow. In winter, according to chile.travel, the Base Torres hike requires a certified guide and specialist gear, and bad weather can cancel the outing.

Rain is likely in the south in any month, summer included. Punta Arenas has a DMC annual normal of 390.2 mm, with 111.7 mm by the end of March. Pack waterproof layers even in January, because the weather changes fast.

There is a logistics point for January to March 2027. Chile.travel reports, citing the civil aviation authority (DGAC), that Puerto Natales airfield will have partial closures for works: it runs normally from 1 to 10 January 2027 and then closes in blocks, such as Monday 11 to Thursday 14 January. Punta Arenas airport operates all year and is about 3 hours from Puerto Natales by road.

Lakes, volcanoes and Chiloé

The Puerto Varas, Pucón and Chiloé area is also at its best in summer, but it rains all year. Puerto Montt has an annual normal of 1,565.6 mm, and almost half falls from May to August. In winter the same area becomes a snow destination, with the Osorno volcano and the Pucón hot springs.

Chile ski season: when it snows and when resorts open

The Chile ski season usually runs from June to September. In 2026, according to chile.travel, Portillo planned to open on Saturday 20 June and close on Saturday 26 September, while Valle Nevado, El Colorado and Farellones projected Friday 19 June openings.

Snowfall decides the opening date: the same source warns that without enough precipitation, resorts can open later. Dates for the 2027 season have not been published yet; in 2026 the official article came out on 14 May. Follow the chile.travel ski resort guide and each resort’s own site.

Ski resort Distance from Santiago (chile.travel) Planned 2026 opening
Farellones About 1 hour Friday 19 June
El Colorado About 40 km Friday 19 June (to be confirmed)
La Parva About 50 km, 1 h 30 June
Valle Nevado 60 km, about 1 h 30 Friday 19 June (to be confirmed)
Portillo About 3 hours via Route 60 Saturday 20 June to Saturday 26 September

Snow without skiing

To see snow without skiing, chile.travel suggests the Cajón del Maipo (about 90 minutes from Santiago, access depending on snow), Laguna del Inca and Laguna del Laja National Park, which is snow-covered between June and September. The site warns that from June to September some access roads may close because of snow or ice, so check conditions before setting off.

Easter Island: January to March

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) has a subtropical climate that stays warm all year, and chile.travel points to January to March as the preferred period, with the Tapati festival in February. The direct flight from Santiago takes about 5 h 30 and covers 3,700 km.

Rain falls in every month, though: the DMC annual normal at Mataveri airport is 1,129.8 mm. Keep spare days in your plan so a rainy front does not cost you the moai visits.

High season, prices and public holidays

High season in Chile has two peaks: summer (December to February), when demand in the south, Patagonia and the Atacama is highest, and July and August at the ski resorts, months chile.travel advises booking early. Outside those peaks, September to November and March to May usually make accommodation easier to find.

Public holidays also push up prices and occupancy. In 2027 the Fiestas Patrias fall on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September, and Law 20.983 adds Friday 17 September as a holiday, creating a three-day weekend. The full calendar is in Chile public holidays 2027.

Month Best for Note
January and February Patagonia, the south, Easter Island, beaches High season, Tapati in February
March Patagonia, Central Chile End of summer
April and May Santiago, wineries, Atacama Autumn, rain starts in May
June to August Skiing and snow, Atacama Rainy winter in Santiago
September End of ski season, Fiestas Patrias Long weekend 17 to 19 September 2027
October and November Santiago, Atacama, flowering desert in rainy years Spring, good balance of weather and price

Checklist for choosing when to go

Answer three questions before booking your flight: which region you want to see, whether you want snow and whether high season suits you. With those answers, the best time to visit Chile for your trip becomes clear.

  • Santiago and wineries only: September to November or March to May.
  • Snow and skiing: July and August are mid-season; June and September depend on that year’s snow.
  • Torres del Paine: December to March, and check flights to Puerto Natales in 2027.
  • Atacama: any month, with a warm jacket for the nights.
  • Combined route: spring or autumn make Santiago plus the Atacama comfortable.
  • In Santiago: load your bip card and check the Santiago Metro opening hours for your arrival day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Chile?

The best time to visit Chile depends on the region. Santiago is most pleasant in spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), the Atacama works all year, Patagonia is best from December to March and snow season runs from June to September. For a multi-region trip, October, November, March and April are the most balanced months.

When does it snow in Chile?

In the Andes near Santiago, snow usually falls from June to September, which is the ski resort season. In 2026 Portillo planned to operate from 20 June to 26 September. To see snow from Santiago, you need to head up to Farellones, Valle Nevado or the Cajón del Maipo.

Is July a good month to visit Chile?

Yes, if you want snow and skiing, because July sits in the middle of the June to September season. The downside is demand: July and August are the busiest months at the ski resorts, and chile.travel advises booking early. In Santiago, July is cold and falls within the rainiest part of the year, May to August.

What is the weather like in Chile in summer?

In summer (December to March) central Chile is hot and dry, with almost no rain in Santiago, and the south is mild. It is the best season for Patagonia, the southern lakes and Easter Island. It is also high season, so hotels and domestic flights are in higher demand, especially in January and February.

When is the best time to visit the Atacama Desert?

The Atacama Desert can be visited all year because rain is almost non-existent: the DMC annual normal at Calama is 6.8 mm. Spring and autumn bring milder nights and fewer visitors. In winter nights drop well below 0 °C, and in summer demand is higher, so book ahead.

When should I go to Torres del Paine?

Go from December to March, the southern summer, when days are long and trails are free of snow. In winter the Base Torres hike requires a certified guide and specialist gear. Between January and March 2027 Puerto Natales airfield will have partial closures, so consider flying into Punta Arenas.

Have the 2027 ski season dates been announced?

Not yet. As of October 2026 the ski resorts had not published 2027 dates. In 2026 chile.travel announced the planned openings on 14 May, so the practical approach is to follow the site and each resort from May 2027, keeping in mind that openings depend on snowfall.
