Deportivo Garcilaso secured a decisive victory over Universitario de Deportes, winning 3-0 in Cusco during the tenth round of the 2026 Clausura Tournament. The home team displayed dominant play from the outset, scoring three goals in just 20 minutes.
The first goal came in the sixth minute, when Aldair Salazar capitalized on a corner taken by Kevin Sandoval, heading the ball in without opposition after César Inga lost his mark. The second goal was by Kevin Sandoval, who, after a series of passes down the right wing, struck powerfully following an inability of Universitario’s defense to clear the ball. This goal came in the 15th minute.
The third goal, scored by Agustín González in the 19th minute, resulted from an error by Piero Quispe, who lost the ball while trying to get past several opponents near the box. González intercepted the ball and fired with his right foot from the edge of the area. His shot deflected off Williams Riveros, leaving goalkeeper Diego Romero with no chance. This goal sparked an exuberant celebration in the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega stadium, as the Universitario players looked on in disbelief at the situation.
Agustín González thus recorded his third goal of the season, having previously scored twice against Atlético Grau. The unexpected result left Universitario in a dilemma, as they had arrived as the tournament leaders and motivated by their recent victory in the clásico against Alianza Lima.
Despite being the favorites due to the altitude of Cusco and their strength as hosts, few expected Deportivo Garcilaso to score three goals in such a short time. The goal difference affected the standings, with Universitario dropping to second place and Deportivo Garcilaso rising to the top spot, awaiting the break for FIFA friendlies.
Universitario will face Melgar in their next match on Saturday, October 10 at 19:00 at the Monumental Stadium in Ate, while Deportivo Garcilaso will host Sport Huancayo on Friday, October 9 at 20:00.
