Today, August 27, several saints are honored in the Christian calendar, with Saint Monica being the central figure of the celebration.

For centuries, it has been common for parents to choose their children’s name in relation to the feast day of a saint. This tradition persists among Catholics and Orthodox, who congratulate people on their name day. The tradition is reflected in the popular “Mañanitas,” which include the phrase: “Today, because it is your saint’s day, we sing to you here…”.

The term ‘name day’ refers to the day when a specific saint is celebrated, although it is often confused with a birthday. On this day, we remember those men and women who had a special connection to the divine and who were canonized or beatified for their exemplary actions.

On the saint calendar of August 27, Saint Monica is commemorated, who was the mother of Saint Augustine. From a young age, she was married to Patricius and, after witnessing her son’s conversion, dedicated her life to prayer. She passed away in the city of Ostia on the Tiber while longing for the heavenly life.

In addition to Saint Monica, other saints and martyrs such as Saint Rufus of Capua, Blessed Roger Cadwalador, and Saint David Lewis, among others, are celebrated. The list includes figures from various centuries, reflecting a rich spiritual heritage.

The process of canonization in the Catholic and Orthodox Church involves a rigorous investigation of the candidate’s life. There are several methods of appointment, which include heroic virtues and martyrdom, as well as the performance of miracles. Canonization is proclaimed through a papal declaration, and a feast day is established for liturgical veneration.

There is no fixed period for canonization, with examples varying from centuries. The last canonization took place in October 2019, with Saint Dulce and Cardinal John Henry Newman recognized as saints.

Catholicism remains one of the most practiced religions worldwide, with over 1.360 billion Catholics. America is the continent with the highest number of believers, while in Asia and Africa there has been an observed increase in the Catholic presence in recent years.
