Chile: Man Confesses to Murder of Missing Student from 2008

A 42-year-old man, identified as Ghislain Quiroz Carrizo, turned himself in at a police station in Conchalí, Santiago, to confess to the murder of Mariana Sepúlveda León, who disappeared in August 2008.

Mariana, then 19 years old, left her home for school and was never seen again. According to his confession, he had a romantic relationship with Quiroz, but she decided to end it, which led to an argument at his house, where he killed her. Afterwards, Quiroz claimed he buried the body on his property and later exhumed the remains to dispose of them. For years, suspicions had focused on another neighbor with a criminal record.

Neighbors in the area have expressed skepticism about the truthfulness of Quiroz’s confession, who recently suffered a stroke that may have affected his mental faculties. Authorities have arrested Quiroz and are investigating his statement, while the case had been inactive since 2021, when prosecutor Xavier Armendáriz ordered it to be reopened.

Marta León, Mariana’s mother, has criticized the investigation, stating that “things were done wrong from the beginning,” and laments that the search for her daughter has not received adequate attention. The mother expressed that her only hope is to find her, relying on her faith.

Another concerning aspect is the strange circumstance surrounding the blocking of Mariana’s identity document, which occurred 14 months after her disappearance in Chañaral, 1,000 kilometers from Santiago. Lawyer Fabiola Aliante has highlighted the unusual nature of this blockage and the contradictory statement of a Carabinero involved.
