Alberto Gamero has reaffirmed his commitment to Millonarios, stating that his goal is to win more titles than the three he secured during his previous tenure from 2020 to 2024. In this new phase, the coach has expressed the need to strengthen the team with midfielders, a full-back, and a winger.
Although the transfer market for Colombian professional football closed on August 10, a new window will open on September 11 for clubs to register players without contracts. Gamero mentioned in an interview with Win Sports that “finding free players is not easy” and added that his scouting team is exploring suitable options to meet the needs of the squad.
Gamero was reappointed as coach of Millonarios on September 3, succeeding Argentine Fabián Bustos. His return marks the resumption of his ties with a club where he achieved three titles during his previous stint. In his first match, Millonarios drew 1-1 against Deportivo Pereira on September 6 at the Palmaseca stadium, revealing areas for defensive improvement, especially in the team’s attacking progression. “We have analyzed the defensive zone and it is a must to improve,” the coach stated.
The coach highlighted that, despite the draw, positive actions were taken on the pitch. In his debut, Gamero adjusted the team’s structure, opting for a four-defender setup and greater control in midfield, focusing on balancing the game and expanding offensive options, with Leonardo Castro as one of the main attacking references.
The new coaching staff has had a short preparation period, as Gamero has concentrated his focus on the existing squad. “I have few training sessions and I have focused a lot on the team that is already formed,” he said. He also emphasized his intention to reconnect with the youth divisions, an aspect that characterized his previous term at Millonarios, where he promoted several young talents.
During his previous tenure, Gamero managed 273 matches, achieving 127 victories, 75 draws, and 71 losses, in addition to winning the Copa Colombia in 2022, Liga BetPlay I in 2023, and the Superliga in 2024. “I understand that the institution wants titles, and that’s what I’m here for, to win titles,” he emphasized. He also announced the imminent arrival of his assistant coach, who has experience in Colombian football, and whose name will be revealed upon arrival.
The next challenge for Millonarios will be against Deportivo Cali, and this match will allow for an assessment of the team’s adaptability and the progress of the new coaching direction as they continue to seek reinforcements.
