Rubén Omar Romano celebrated the completion of his treatment for prostate cancer with an emotional ceremony at La Noria on September 8. Romano concluded 35 days of oncological care, accompanied by his wife, Paola Velasco, and family. His recovery coincides with La Máquina’s preparations for the Clásico Joven against América, where the team aims to use this experience to promote the importance of prevention and medical check-ups.
Paola Velasco shared a video on social media of her husband ringing the bell in the hospital, marking the end of his treatment. The moment was filled with emotion, and Velasco emphasized the symbolism of the bell: “The sound of this bell represents much more than the end of treatment; it represents 35 days of courage, 35 days of struggle, 35 days of faith, 35 days hand in hand.”
The couple experienced the process surrounded by family love. “Today we rang it with our hearts full of gratitude because God supported us when we were scared and gave us strength when we thought we didn’t have it,” she added.
Prostate cancer was diagnosed in December 2024 after an anomaly was detected during a medical check-up. Romano had been under medical supervision following heart surgery in February 2021. His treatment included a procedure to remove the prostate and concluded on September 4.
The news of Romano’s recovery prompted supportive reactions within the football community, including messages from Miguel Herrera, Christian Martinoli, and Matías Vuoso. Meanwhile, Cruz Azul shared an image on their social media with a bell and an encouraging message: “Overcoming cancer is the best news. All of Nación Azul sends you a big hug, Rubén Omar.
