Almost 20 years after sharing the locker room at FC Barcelona, Rafael Márquez and Gabriel Milito met again on the pitch, this time as coaches of their respective teams.
The meeting took place at Verde Valle, home of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, on September 9, before the team’s training. Márquez, who now manages the Mexican National Team, was welcomed by Milito, who is in charge of Chivas. During their reunion, both former players reminisced about their time in Spain, posed for photographs, and exchanged jerseys.
Márquez’s visit was part of his tour of Liga MX, which includes meetings with all 18 clubs to establish more direct communication between the Mexican National Team, the executives, coaching staffs, and players. On this occasion, the delegation from the Tri was accompanied by Duilio Davino, Andrés Lillini, and other collaborators of the head coach.
The main objective of these visits is to share information and learn about the working methodologies of the teams, as well as to maintain effective coordination ahead of the upcoming training camps. The presence of the National Team’s coaching staff also allows them to observe training sessions and talk with eligible players.
In Verde Valle, the itinerary included a meeting with the club’s management, watching the training session led by Milito, and discussions between Márquez and some Chivas players. Additionally, jerseys from Guadalajara were presented to the visitors as a symbol of camaraderie. The tour does not automatically imply a call-up for the observed players, as Márquez seeks direct information about each team and player before announcing his first squad list as national team coach.
The day concluded with a final discussion between the National Team representatives and Chivas members before the delegation left the facilities without making any statements to the media.
