Mayer Candelo has been officially appointed as the new assistant coach of Millonarios. The former Colombian footballer will join Alberto Gamero in this new phase of the team, along with Jorge Castro and Julio Charales. The confirmation from the club was made on September 9, 2026, through a statement highlighting Candelo’s career as a player at Millonarios and his contribution to two important titles.
In his presentation, Candelo shared his experience in professional football, mentioning: “I played for 23 years, won seven titles, and started my coaching career at Cortulúa, then moved to Deportivo Cali, and now I return to the Maz Azul.” The assistant coach also expressed his admiration for Alberto Gamero, whom he considers the best coach in Colombia, and stated that his goal is to grow in knowledge and contribute to the club.
Julio Charales, who returns to the team as a fitness coach after his stint at the club between 2020 and 2023, will also join the coaching staff. Charales was part of the star title 16 in June 2023 and has highlighted the importance of his relationship with Gamero and his focus on training methodology.
Additionally, Jorge Castro, who has experience as a player and head coach, will join Candelo. Castro expressed his commitment to the goal of winning titles and improving the team’s performance. The first match under Millonarios’ new coaching staff will be against Deportivo Cali on September 10 at 8:00 p.m. in the Liga BetPlay 2026-II.
