The heavyweight fight between Thomas Carty and Dave Allen concluded without a result in the first round, during an event that was part of the card headlined by Katie Taylor at Croke Park, Dublin. The bout was interrupted after 82 seconds when Carty fell out of the ring and required medical assistance.

The matchup, expected to go 10 rounds and promoted as a supporting bout for Taylor’s farewell, was halted after a punch that apparently struck Carty in the back of the head. The Irish boxer lost his balance and fell to the ground, lying on his back beside the ring while approximately 80,000 spectators looked on.

Thirty-year-old Thomas Carty was treated by medical personnel for several minutes and required oxygen before being taken to the locker room. During his attempt to get back up, his foot got caught in a chair, causing further confusion at the event. Following the ringside doctor’s recommendation, the referee decided to declare the fight a no-contest, as Carty could not continue. The decision left unresolved a match that could have marked a high point in the Dublin boxer’s career.

The stadium screens replayed the sequence of the incident, leading some spectators to boo Allen, although the action did not last long enough to develop a competitive outcome. Thirty-four-year-old Allen from Doncaster expressed surprise at what had occurred. “It’s one of the strangest things I’ve seen in my life,” he commented after the suspension, according to reports. Although Carty and Allen did not make statements to the media afterward, Allen posted on his social media: “I’ve had some very strange moments in my career, but this might top it. I hope Carty is healthy and well.”

Both boxers came into the match with different backgrounds. Carty had a record of 11 wins and 1 loss, having returned to the ring earlier this year after recovering from a ligament injury. On the other hand, Dave Allen had a record of 27 victories, 9 defeats, and 2 draws, and had anticipated looking to “smash” Carty in what could be one of his final professional bouts.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the event, attention quickly shifted to the incident in the first round. The audience paid little heed to the episode as the card progressed, although confusion lingered in the air. The fight between Carty and Allen was only one of two incidents that caused bewilderment during the evening; Paddy Gallagher’s earlier victory over Paul Ryan was also overturned due to an administrative error in the scorecards.
