Pierre Gasly secured his first pole position in Formula 1 during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. This achievement came after a challenging weekend, where he had lost a podium at the Monaco GP.

The French Alpine driver shocked by beating the Mercedes competitors, clocking a time of 1:21.786 and claiming pole with a margin of 0.060 seconds over George Russell. Oscar Piastri from McLaren took third place, 0.180 seconds behind Gasly.

The excitement was palpable when Gasly, upon being informed of his position, exclaimed over the radio: “Let’s go! Not even they can believe it! Incredible, thank you so much everyone. This is amazing.” In the pit, the celebration was exuberant, and Franco Colapinto, his teammate, embraced him as he stepped out of the car.

In later statements, Gasly expressed his joy over the achievement, highlighting: “It was incredible. Thank you so much everyone… I’m very happy. This is my first pole in nine years.” Until now, his best previous qualifying result had been fourth place at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

Colapinto was also pleased with his performance, describing his result as “a great surprise for everyone” and acknowledging the effort of Gasly and the team. Following a solid performance in practice sessions, Gasly showed his strength from the start, leading in Q1 and finishing with the fastest lap in Q3.

Although Colapinto finished eighth in qualifying, his lap was noteworthy, just 0.434 seconds behind his teammate. The race in Monza will start at 10:00 (Argentina time), where Gasly will seek to replicate his success from 2020 when he won his first race in Formula 1.
