The Parc des Princes is going through tough times. PSG, the current back-to-back European champion, is facing a poor start in Ligue 1 with three winless matches, the worst opening in 14 years and since Luis Enrique’s arrival at the club.
The latest setback occurred in a key match against Filipe Luis’s Monaco. Marquinhos opened the scoring for PSG, but the home team was overtaken by two goals from Flavio Nazinho and Stanis Idumbo. Previously, PSG had drawn matches against Rennes (2-2) and Lille (2-2), where they also needed to come back.
With this situation, PSG is 7 points behind the leader in the standings and has no margin for error in continuing to accumulate titles in Ligue 1. This comes just four days before the start of the new Champions League, where they will debut against Slovan Bratislava.
Despite the negative streak, PSG has reaffirmed its confidence in Luis Enrique, who will continue as coach until 2030. Alongside him, the club also renewed contracts for five other players, including Fabián Ruiz and João Neves. The defeat did not change the coach’s stance, who stated: “Overall, I think we clearly deserved to win. With bad luck, you draw, and we ended up losing the match. It’s inexplicable, but these things happen in football.” Luis Enrique also rejected seeking excuses: “I am happy with the players, although we need to improve both individually and collectively.”
The goal for PSG is to win a third consecutive Champions League, something only achieved by Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane. Luis Enrique has highlighted the magnitude of the challenge: “Right now we have a unique challenge, something practically unprecedented in the history of European football: to match Real Madrid if we manage to win a third consecutive Champions League.” However, to reach this goal, PSG needs to improve its performance in Ligue 1, as recent stumbles have revealed the need for adjustments after a summer of changes.
