Gustavo Alfaro has renewed his contract as coach of the Paraguay national team until 2030 after leading the Albirroja to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. The renewal was announced by the president of the Paraguayan Football Association.
This announcement was made on Friday by Robert Harrison, who shared on the social network X, “2030, here we go”, accompanying the post with an image alongside Alfaro, who will turn 65 in January. Although the Paraguayan Football Association did not disclose the economic details of the new contract, it is a significant step for the team.
Alfaro took charge of Paraguay in August 2024, at a time when the team was outside the direct qualification positions for the World Cup. Under his leadership, the team achieved an unbeaten streak of nine matches in qualifiers with five wins and four draws before suffering their first defeat against Brazil in São Paulo.
During that period, Paraguay secured important victories: they defeated Brazil 1-0 in Asunción, overcame Argentina (the world champions) 2-1, and beat Uruguay 2-0. These results were key to ensuring their direct qualification for the World Cup, finishing in sixth place in the standings with 14 goals scored and 10 conceded.
In the World Cup, Paraguay was part of Group D, where they lost to host United States 4-1, won against Turkey 1-0, and drew 0-0 with Australia, thus progressing to the knockout stage. In the round of 16, they faced Germany, where the match ended 1-1 and Paraguay advanced after a penalty shootout, marking a milestone by eliminating a world champion. The cycle concluded with a 0-1 defeat against France in the round of 16.
In total, Gustavo Alfaro managed 24 matches with Paraguay, achieving a performance rate of 52.78%, with 10 wins, 8 draws, and 6 losses. Alfaro’s continuity was supported by Robert Harrison, who requested that the coach take on a “second term” in his leadership. Alfaro had also previously mentioned the importance of a long-term process in Paraguayan football, conditions that have led to his extension in the position.
