Sebastián Britos revealed that he was pleased with Álvaro Barco’s departure from his position at Universitario, arguing that Barco did not make decisions that benefited the club. The Uruguayan goalkeeper, who moved to Peñarol, stated that it was Barco who decided on his exit from the team for the 2026 season.

Britos’ comments came before a new classic in Peruvian football and were made during an interview on the YouTube channel ‘Colectivo World’. There, he shared his experience at Universitario, his relationship with the club’s staff, and his opinions on Barco’s sports management.

Although he did not describe his relationship as contentious, Britos affirmed that there was no closeness between him and the former sports director. “Neutral,” he described their interaction when asked about his dealings with Barco. However, Britos mentioned that he had good relationships with several club employees, including officials, kitchen staff, scouting, clinic, and nutrition.

Regarding his departure, Britos maintained that Barco was responsible for not renewing his contract, stating: “Without a doubt, without a doubt. I have no doubt about that. I don’t even need anyone to tell me.” After leaving Universitario, the goalkeeper joined Peñarol, while Universitario seeks its fourth national championship, an unprecedented goal in its history.

Barco’s exit opens a new chapter for Universitario’s sports planning. Britos criticized the decisions that, in his opinion, harmed the team, asserting: “Honestly, I’m sincere, I was happy because not just with me, but he did not make good decisions. I believe he was not doing good for the club.”

Additionally, Britos commented on the current situation in goal. Since the arrival of Argentine coach Héctor Cúper, Diego Romero has been the starter, a change that has drawn criticism due to the team’s defensive performance in the Clausura Tournament, where Universitario has conceded 11 goals in eight matches. Britos defended Miguel Vargas, who had been performing solidly before this change, deeming it unfair.

The goalkeeper also analyzed Romero’s performance, suggesting that he could show signs of anxiety in certain situations, especially when dealing with crosses. “I see Diego Romero a bit anxious at times. I see him making decisions a little hastily,” he observed, although he added that he would not question the abilities of the two goalkeepers.
