Hernán Galíndez has expressed his openness to a call-up to the Ecuador national team following the 1-1 draw between Huracán and Belgrano, a tense match that ended with a missed penalty from Belgrano. The Huracán goalkeeper was highlighted during the game and, in statements to ESPN, referred to the possibility of Marcelo Gallardo taking on the role of the new coach of the Ecuadorian national team.

Galíndez, who was the starting goalkeeper for Ecuador during the 2026 World Cup, stated that he is available to represent the country if called upon, despite having previously expressed his desire to conclude his time with the Tri after the World Cup. In this context, he emphasized that Gallardo’s arrival could be a valuable opportunity for the national team.

“I don’t know if it’s confirmed, but a coach of that level for the Ecuador national team is a very important step for the FEF,” Galíndez said. Despite his frustrations following the World Cup, he reiterated his willingness to return if needed. “I will be available if they need me; it is a privilege to be part of the selection,” the goalkeeper added.

Galíndez’s statements suggest the possibility that he may be considered for future call-ups, even under Gallardo’s leadership, should his tenure begin during the FIFA window in September. The goalkeeper highlighted that, although a coaching change does not guarantee immediate results, it could represent a growth opportunity for the national team.

The arrival of Gallardo has not yet been officially confirmed by the Ecuadorian Football Federation. According to reports, negotiations have advanced in terms of sports, and economic aspects are pending to formalize the contract, which could be for four years with an eye on the 2030 World Cup. Journalist César Luis Merlo stated: “It is confirmed that he is a step away. There is an agreement on the sports side. Economic aspects have been discussed, but the sports agreement is resolved.”

The Ecuadorian leadership is looking to ensure continuity in the process following Sebastián Beccacece’s departure after the recent World Cup, in which Ecuador was eliminated in the Round of 16. If the negotiation is finalized, Gallardo would need to prepare the national team for an Asian tour scheduled during the next FIFA window, which includes matches against South Korea and Japan, as well as a third match on October 5.

In the final part of his statement, Galíndez reiterated his interest in returning to the national team if he receives a call-up, positioning himself as a key player for the future of the national team at a crucial moment of potential changes under Gallardo’s direction.
