Constant use of mobile phones can have serious repercussions for the physical health of young people. Recent research has linked addiction to mobile video games with an increase in pain in areas such as the neck, upper back, elbows, and wrists, especially among university students.
The study was conducted by surveying 364 medical students at universities in Jordan to assess the connection between mobile video game addiction and musculoskeletal problems. The results revealed significant differences between those with addictive behaviors and those without, particularly in the areas of the body that are most subjected to intensive device use.
Approximately 9% of respondents, 34 people, met the established criteria to be considered addicted to mobile video games. This group reported significantly higher prevalence of physical ailments compared to their non-addicted peers. Elbow pain was the most notable; 41.2% of addicted students reported it, in contrast to 12.5% of non-addicted students. Regarding neck pain, 85.3% of the addicted group reported discomfort, compared to 65% of others. Similarly, pain in the upper back affected 64.7% of the addicted group, compared to 55% of their peers. Wrists and hands were also affected: 41.2% compared to 34% in the non-addicted group.
Researchers also found that addicted students were more likely to report that their pain interfered with their daily activities, including studying and leisure time. Some had sought medical attention for overwhelming pain in their wrists, hands, hips, and knees.
The study points out ergonomic factors as central elements of the problem. Holding the mobile device for prolonged periods imposes constant pressure on hands and joints, in addition to causing fixed postures and repetitive movements that can lead to musculoskeletal injuries over time.
The authors conclude that mobile video games pose a physical risk that goes beyond the usual discussion around screen time. The duration of uninterrupted gaming sessions encourages exposure to forced positions, making this type of usage a particular case in the realm of problematic device use.
In light of these findings, researchers are calling for greater awareness about digital health and ergonomic training in the university environment. They suggest that educational institutions include specific guidelines in their health programs to address issues such as active breaks and proper posture during device use, which is crucial for students facing long study hours.
With the growing popularity of mobile video games among youth, researchers emphasize that prevention strategies must consider both psychological well-being and the physical consequences of excessive device use.
