Using Baking Soda to Whiten Clothes: What Experts Think

Maintaining white garments is often more complicated than a regular wash. Over time, fibers accumulate sweat, dirt, and residues from cleaning products. This can result in towels and sheets that lose their whiteness and take on gray or yellowish tones.

Baking soda is often presented as a home remedy to restore the whiteness of clothes. Cleaning experts emphasize that while it can be helpful for dealing with odors and certain residues, it does not replace the function of detergent nor does it act as a bleach in a chemical sense. According to the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), baking soda is a mild alkali that can be effective against acidic soils, and the University of Georgia classifies it as one of the mildest cleaning agents among alkaline products.

Regarding its effectiveness in laundry, baking soda can aid in odor removal and the elimination of certain residues, although its effectiveness varies depending on the type of dirt and the material of the garment. A scientific review from 2025 in the Textile Research Journal explained that baking soda can neutralize acidic compounds, but its effectiveness is limited against substances like ammonia. Its use is primarily recommended for sportswear or towels, where its most relevant function is odor control.

When it comes to whitening, the difference is even more evident. A study in RSC Advances revealed that bleaching agents work through oxidation on the molecules that cause stains, a process that baking soda cannot replicate. Although using baking soda may leave garments cleaner, it does not imply chemical bleaching.

To use baking soda in the laundry, it is suggested to add it to the regular wash cycle in moderate amounts. A paste of baking soda and water can be applied to specific stains, always testing on an inconspicuous area first. Special care should be taken with delicate fabrics, and it is advised to avoid mixing baking soda with vinegar during the same wash, as they neutralize each other.

Stain prevention is equally crucial for preserving the whiteness of clothes. ACI recommends separating whites from dark-colored garments, as well as treating stains immediately. Proper use of detergent and not overloading the washing machine are important factors for achieving good cleaning results.

Finally, following the instructions on the label regarding bleaches is essential, as oxygen-based bleaches are milder and suitable for maintaining the whiteness of clothes, in contrast to bleach, which is more aggressive.
