The former socialist member Leire Díez and the former president of Correos Juan Manuel Serrano joined forces to support the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, during the five days of reflection he took in April 2024 to decide his future. This collaboration raises investigations into an alleged plot that may have tried to undermine legal cases affecting the Government.
According to the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard, communications between Díez and Serrano suggest that they worked closely together to achieve the objectives of the supposed organization. The judge of the National Court, Santiago Pedraz, has named Díez as the coordinator of this plot, allegedly led by former socialist leader Santos Cerdán. The UCO indicates that Serrano, who was Sánchez’s chief of staff in the PSOE from 2014 to 2018 and president of Correos from 2018 to 2023, participated in these activities.
The investigation details that Díez and Serrano had exchanges before and after Sánchez published the “Letter to the Citizens” on April 24, 2024, coinciding with the indictment of his wife, Begoña Gómez. It is noted that both agreed to meet on April 26 at the PSOE headquarters in Ferraz, Madrid, where a group including Cerdán, businessman Javier Pérez Dolset, and other party members would be present.
During this meeting, Díez and Pérez Dolset presented audios related to actions by retired commissioner José Manuel Villarejo. Subsequently, Díez and Serrano exchanged messages about possible recordings of a meeting between Villarejo and Francisco Martínez, former Secretary of State for Security, where business dealings of Sánchez’s father-in-law were discussed.
In their communications, Díez expressed her willingness to help Sánchez, stating that “This man needs help. He deserves it,” while Serrano suggested that she should “let him do it.” The organization analyzed that on April 29, before Sánchez announced his decision to continue in office, Díez showed nervousness about the future of the president.
Moreover, on May 20, Díez spoke with Vicente Fernández, former president of the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI), highlighting her collaboration with Serrano to fight against “the bad people”.
The UCO documents that, after this reflection period, there are multiple references to Serrano’s involvement in the activities of this organization, including another meeting in Ferraz on May 6, 2024, alongside Díez and Cerdán.
