The travel and tourism sector in Peru has significant growth potential, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which has pointed out that this sector outperformed global economic growth in 2025.
During 2025, the performance of the tourism sector was highlighted by its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP), where the United States led with an input of USD 885.800 billion, followed by China with USD 434.800 billion and Germany with USD 202.900 billion. Mexico ranked fourth, contributing USD 149.400 billion.
The WTTC also presented a ranking that measured spending on leisure and recreational travel, where again, the United States occupied the first place with USD 1.2545 trillion, followed by China, Germany, and Mexico. These findings underline the importance of major markets in the global tourism economy.
For Peru, the WTTC projects significant growth in the tourism sector, with revenue expectations reaching USD 25.800 billion this year. The president of the WTTC, Gloria Guevara, emphasized the need to improve the tourism offering in the country, suggesting the enhancement of existing destinations and the development of new products.
Globally, the tourism sector saw a growth of 4.1%, exceeding the global economic growth of 2.8%. This increase also positively impacted the labor market, generating 366 million jobs in 2025, where one in nine jobs was related to tourism.
In this context, Peru received 1.95 million international tourists between January and July of this year, reflecting an increase in visitor arrivals. The WTTC believes these results can be expanded with continuous efforts to diversify the tourism offering.
Additionally, Guevara suggested the need for a regional perspective in tourism competition, favoring the implementation of regional visa mechanisms that facilitate the movement of travelers between different countries. This strategy could follow the example of Asia, where such facilities have boosted inbound tourism, enhancing the experience for travelers.
