President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the operation of the Maya Train and claimed that the accidents that occurred on the tracks are the result of human errors, not maintenance failures by the responsible companies.
During a press conference on September 3, Sheinbaum responded to accusations regarding the maintenance of the Maya Train, asserting that “the Maya Train has its maintenance as any train in the world should have.” This was in response to claims that the hiring of maintenance companies has caused problems in the infrastructure.
Despite claims of proper management, the president emphasized that if there are irregularities in the contracts, they must be investigated. “But to say that there is no maintenance, that there are failures in maintenance, the truth is, well, I cannot overlook that observation,” she added.
Sheinbaum reaffirmed her support for the companies Hemosa Ingeniería and ASCH México, responsible for maintenance, when questioned about the transparency in contract award processes. In particular, it was mentioned that an annual contract of 837 million pesos has been awarded for the maintenance of sections 1 and 4 of the Maya Train, which stretch from Palenque to Cancún. Despite this significant amount, incidents have occurred, including a “track mishap” that happened on August 31, forcing the evacuation of a passenger train near the San Francisco de Campeche station.
The president announced that a meeting will soon be held where the director of the Maya Train will report on the companies managed by the Ministry of National Defense and the ongoing maintenance work. A statement detailing the rail maintenance procedures is also expected to be issued. “The Maya Train operates well, it has its maintenance. There is ongoing work,” she concluded.
Additionally, she mentioned that investigations into the Interoceanic Train accident indicated that there were no technical failures, but rather “excessive speed on a curve.”
