The Ministry of Education of Spain has opened online enrollment at the Integrated Center for Distance Regulated Education (CIDEAD) for the 2026-2027 school year, with a deadline of September 14 at 23:59. This call is aimed at Cuban families whose children already have Spanish citizenship but reside on the island.
The enrollment includes Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), and Baccalaureate in a flexible format. This opening responds to a growing demand for educational tools, especially after the closure of applications for the Democratic Memory Law in October 2025, which left thousands of nationality applications pending resolution.
To access CIDEAD, Spain sets two requirements: the student must have Spanish nationality or have previously studied in the Spanish educational system, and must reside outside the country and be enrolled in an educational institution where they live. Families must present a residence certificate and a certification from the foreign educational institution to verify this dual condition.
It is important to note that a parent who acquires Spanish nationality does not automatically confer this benefit to their child; the minor needs to have citizenship in their own right, unless they have previously studied in the Spanish system.
Students can continue attending their school in Cuba, as CIDEAD’s Flexible Studies allow students not to leave their current institution. This format enables them to study subjects from the Spanish curriculum parallel to their usual education in Cuba.
Another educational option is offered through the United World Colleges (UWC) network, which has established its UWC Cuba National Committee. This committee aims to provide scholarships to young Cubans aged 16 to 19 who are in the last two years of secondary education, prioritizing the economic situation of families.
UWC scholarships are significant, as more than 80% of students receive some level of financial aid. These graduates can access scholarship programs at universities in the United States, including Ivy League institutions.
The opening of applications for UWC Cuba will be announced soon, providing a new avenue for students seeking international academic opportunities.
