An operation by the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) at El Bosque Prison in Barranquilla has caused tensions, including a riot in which several inmates were injured. President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered the transfer of at least 17 inmates to different prisons across the country.
The INPEC intervention, which began on the morning of September 3rd, aims to dismantle the so-called “comfort zones” within the prison. The president emphasized that this measure is part of a broader effort to control organized crime operating from within prisons.
During the operation, a confrontation among inmates was reported, resulting in injuries that necessitated the transfer of some to the PASO El Bosque medical center. Sources indicate that the transfer, which began at 6:30 a.m., included searches of several cells to find prohibited items. The violent response from some inmates was reported amid these control measures.
The exact number of injuries and the severity of their wounds have not yet been confirmed. Authorities are continuing to investigate the reasons behind the disturbances, which include resistance to the transfers and ongoing searches. President De la Espriella has stated that the intention behind these transfers is to eliminate the conditions that allow some inmates to continue committing crimes from prison. Those sent to Bogotá will be redistributed to other penitentiary centers in the country.
