The national government has announced legal actions against the former Minister of Equality, Luis Alfredo Acosta, due to his failure to deliver the keys to warehouses containing goods valued at $16.800 million. This measure comes in the context of the liquidation of the Ministry of Equality.
Miller Soto, government spokesperson, stated that “the former minister still has not delivered the keys to warehouses containing nearly sixteen billion eight hundred million pesos in goods from the DIAN.” The review was carried out based on Fonigualdad, where “more than sixty last-minute contracts” were identified, totaling approximately four hundred sixty-nine billion pesos. Soto highlighted that a single contractor concentrated more than one hundred seventy-one billion pesos, while only 5% of the investment was executed the previous year.
As a result of these irregularities, the government has filed thirteen complaints, including six criminal, five disciplinary, and two fiscal ones. During the closure of the ministry, 40 executive positions will be eliminated, a measure linked to the liquidation process.
The government of Abelardo de la Espriella has progressed in dissolving the Ministry of Equality, eliminating all deputy minister positions. This decision was made after the Constitutional Court determined that the entity lacked legal foundation, which also led to the failure of a law in Congress aimed at replacing it.
The closure of the ministry is framed within Decree 0626 of June 19, 2026, which stipulated an initial one-year period to complete the liquidation and the possibility of an extension. The elimination of the deputy ministries is included in a scheme of restrictions that have been applied since the start of the closure process.
The closure of the Ministry of Equality has generated job uncertainty for nearly 600 officials, leading to protests in June 2026. This ministry was created by Law 2281 of 2023 as part of Gustavo Petro’s government effort to address existing inequalities. However, its existence was declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court in 2024, leading to its closure.
