Nuevo León, which has long been viewed as an entity with low seismic activity, now faces a shift in this perception due to new studies suggesting a potential earthquake risk.
Researchers have begun to analyze specific areas, such as the municipality of Galeana, where the Santo Domingo fault is located. This geological system has garnered particular attention due to evidence of recent displacements and its capacity to generate significant earthquakes. Specialists from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) have indicated that this fault could trigger earthquakes of considerable magnitudes, especially if multiple segments activate simultaneously.
The Santo Domingo fault, situated in a community of the same name approximately 40 kilometers from the municipal seat of Galeana, has been under study for the past four to five years. The findings have revealed geological and geomorphological patterns related to movements in the area where the fault is located. The length and segmentation of the fault are factors that heighten concern, as each segment could generate movements ranging from magnitudes 5 to 6.5, and in the worst-case scenario, simultaneous rupture could lead to an earthquake with a magnitude close to 7.
The location of the fault also increases risk, given its proximity to urban areas such as the metropolitan regions of Monterrey, Saltillo, and other municipalities like Galeana and Linares. Although recent studies do not predict an imminent large-magnitude earthquake, they highlight the importance of enhancing knowledge about active geological structures and the vulnerability of nearby populations.
Since 2006, Nuevo León has recorded more than 300 earthquakes, although this does not necessarily indicate a real increase in seismic activity, but rather an improved capacity to detect tectonic movements. The Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN) is responsible for monitoring seismic activity and classifying detected events. An earthquake measuring 4.5 that occurred on May 11, 2025, in Montemorelos, which caused damage to 72 homes, illustrated how even moderate tremors can impact vulnerable localities.
Experts warn about the vulnerability of constructions in Nuevo León, particularly in areas where self-construction is allowed and building codes are outdated. In response, efforts are being made to advance the identification of geological faults and improve earthquake preparedness. Recommendations include updating building codes, mapping faults, and strengthening civil protection protocols.
The data collection on the Santo Domingo fault does not imply accurate predictions about a potential earthquake but aims to enhance the forecast of seismic risks in the region. Evidence suggests that Nuevo León cannot be considered safe from earthquakes, underscoring the need to integrate this risk into state prevention strategies.
