Millonarios will begin a new project under the management of coach Alberto Gamero, who may return to his position after an absence of one year and nine months. The official presentation is still pending, and the team is preparing to face the Liga BetPlay and the Copa Colombia.
Alberto Gamero’s return comes at a critical moment, shortly after the dismissal of Fabián Bustos on September 1, the day before the classic match against Santa Fe, which ended in a 3-2 defeat for Millonarios and broke a five-game unbeaten streak. In this context, Gamero seeks to restructure the team.
During his previous five-year tenure, Gamero led the club to three titles and aimed for a strong presence in the finals, although his leadership was also questioned due to some eliminations in local and international tournaments. Returning to his usual formation, he is expected to implement a 4-2-3-1 system, reversing the five-defender scheme used by his predecessor.
One of the main concerns for the coach is the absence of full-back Jhomier Guerrero, who will not be available until the end of the year due to a fracture. This forces him to choose between Carlos Sarabia and Samuel Martín to cover his position. In defense, he will also have to decide between Sergio Mosquera and Stiven Barreiro as a partner for Andrés Llinás, as Jorge Arias poses doubts due to his physical condition.
As for the forwards, Rodrigo Contreras and Andrey Estupiñán present uncertainties in the attack. Gamero will have to decide whether to start Contreras or keep him on the bench, given his strategy usually employs a single striker. Estupiñán, on the other hand, could adapt to a role as a winger, stemming from his standout performance in Pasto.
In the midfield area, Mateo García is expected to take the place of Leonai Souza, who is also among the injured, sharing the list with Guerrero, Contreras, and Arias. The lineup that Gamero is likely to adopt is: Javier Burrai; Carlos Sarabia (Samuel Martin), Andrés Llinás, Stiven Barreiro (Sergio Mosquera), Sebastián Valencia; Mateo García, Rodrigo Ureña, Daniel Ruiz, Francisco Chaverra, Andrey Estupiñán; Leonardo Castro (Rodrigo Contreras).
Regarding the coaching staff, the composition for this new stage has not yet been confirmed, although it is rumored that Jorge Castro will be Gamero’s assistant, replacing Orlando Rojas and Cerveleón Cuesta.
