The III Women’s Boxing Cup of Independence will take place at the Sports Complex of Quetzaltenango on Saturday, September 5. The event aims to raise awareness about human trafficking and violence against women, girls, and adolescents.
The tournament, which will be held under the slogan “Dreams, not chains” and the motto “My life is valuable and priceless”, will bring together athletes from various departments, aiming for sports to serve as a means to inform families about the risks of exploitation and aggression. The initiative promotes the creation of violence-free life projects, as well as the empowerment of women in the sporting realm.
The event will combine fights, interactions with athletes, and awareness activities aimed at the public, with free admission starting at 09:00 hours. Statistics from the Secretary against Sexual Violence, Exploitation, and Human Trafficking (SVET) highlight the urgency of addressing these issues, with 8,413 reports of sexual violence documented in Guatemala during 2025.
Quetzaltenango had 504 reports in that same year, placing it among the areas with the highest reports of such crimes in the country. Human trafficking particularly targets women and adolescents, with a report identifying 1,276 potential victims between 2025 and April 2026, many of whom were associated with sexual and labor exploitation.
The National Women’s Boxing Team will also participate in the tournament, featuring athletes such as María Victoria Chiroy, Dulcita García, Milene Yool, Naomi Gálvez, and Ashley Jerez. Additionally, a tribute will be paid to María Victoria “Viko” Chiroy, who will engage with youth and will be available for photographs and autographs.
Miloksa Ramos, coach of the Lunas Academy, invited families to attend and support the athletes in this event that seeks to deliver a message of hope and empowerment. “We can achieve our dreams,” the coach emphasized. The organization stresses that the participants’ goals transcend the sports field, aiming to inform and strengthen violence-free life projects for children and women.
The event is supported by the National Boxing Federation of Guatemala, the Autonomous Sports Confederation of Guatemala, the Xelafer Popular Entertainment Commission, and the SVET.
