The governments of the Dominican Republic and Haiti agreed this Thursday, September 3, to strengthen cooperation in various areas, including border security, migration, and trade. The meeting took place at the CODEVI Industrial Park, led by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Víctor O. Bisonó Haza, and Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Raina Forbin.
During the meeting, both delegations discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda and reaffirmed the need for ongoing dialogue between the two countries. According to the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), mechanisms to improve governance on border security and migration issues were analyzed, as well as actions against illegal economies operating in border areas.
The agenda also covered formalizing trade, promoting investments, and improving air connectivity, all deemed vital for the economic development of both nations. Regarding security, officials agreed on the importance of having international community support for the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), emphasizing the need for attention from the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
The delegations expressed their intention to ensure the full deployment of the mission approved by resolution 2793 on September 30, 2025, and to renew its mandate, in order to support Haitian authorities in recovering security and creating conditions for sustainable peace.
Representatives also expressed their desire to restore the Dominican Republic’s consular operations in Haiti when security conditions allow. Following the official meeting, there was an additional gathering between diplomats and businesspeople to discuss the need to boost economic activity and create jobs in both nations.
In the current context, the General Directorate of Migration of the Dominican Republic reported that in June, 34,226 Haitian citizens in irregular migration status were deported, bringing the total to 196,321 deportations in the first half of 2026. Since Luis Rafael Lee Ballester took office as director on October 1, 2024, deportations have reached a total of 670,500 individuals.
