President Javier Milei announced an increase in the budget of the Ministry of Defense for the construction of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego. In a national broadcast, the president emphasized the importance of this project for Argentina’s geopolitical projection.
During a 16-minute speech, Milei mentioned that he will sign a Decree of Necessity and Urgency to expand the resources of the Ministry led by Carlos Presti. “The primary goal is to build an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego and enhance our telecommunications capabilities. This base will make us the most important logistical hub in the South Atlantic…”
The president also revealed that in 2024 he visited Ushuaia alongside General Laura Richardson, head of the U.S. Southern Command, where it was discussed that the base will serve as a logistical center for cruises and commercial vessels in the South Atlantic and as support in Antarctica. “We are here to reaffirm our commitment to the development of our integrated naval base…” said Milei.
This announcement is part of a realignment in Argentina’s foreign policy, which Milei defined at an event in Aeroparque when signing an agreement with the United States for the delivery of a C-130 Hercules plane to the Argentine Air Force. The president stated: “With us, a new era of Argentina’s relations with the world begins…”
Additionally, the president addressed the situation of the Malvinas Islands, emphasizing that the United Nations has requested for 50 years that Argentina and the United Kingdom avoid unilateral actions in the territorial dispute. Milei criticized the Sea Lion oil project as an extraction of non-renewable resources that belong to Argentina and warned about the urgency to act against it.
To tackle the situation, Milei announced the signing of a decree to expedite sanction procedures against those participating in oil extraction initiatives in the Argentine territory under British occupation. A National Sovereignty Defense Bill will also be sent to Congress, which includes the creation of the National Security Council.
