The third meteorological drought period in El Salvador has come to an end following scattered rains in recent days, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Environment.
The document prepared by the Directorate of the Natural Threats Observatory, the Meteorology Management, and the Climate and Agrometeorology Area indicates that the lack of rainfall extended from August 7 to September 3. During this period, the phenomenon reached its maximum category: severe meteorological drought, defined as more than 21 consecutive days without precipitation.
The rains recorded in various parts of the country ended this third episode of meteorological drought. Although the report does not detail the cumulative rainfall amounts, it states that the precipitation helped to alleviate the condition that affected the country for almost a month.
The Ministry of Environment identified the stations that experienced the highest number of consecutive dry days, counting between 24 and 27 Consecutive Dry Days (CDD) in various localities, including Planes de Montecristo and Metapán in Santa Ana, as well as Santa Cruz Porrillo in San Vicente and several in La Unión.
This severe drought period was determined based on technical monitoring associated with the dry weather from August 7 to September 3, 2026. The report also highlights that no station is currently reporting a heatwave, as temperatures have slightly decreased in recent days.
Maximum temperatures are expected to vary by region, ranging from 24 °C to 30 °C in mountainous areas and between 36 °C and 38 °C in the eastern region. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment maintains the forecast of scattered rains in the coming days, despite warning that heat will persist during afternoons, especially in the eastern region.
Rains are expected across much of El Salvador in September, although the amounts may be below usual levels. According to an additional report from the Ministry, northern regions and some areas in the west and center could accumulate between 400 and 500 millimeters, while the rest of the territory could see precipitation of between 200 and 300 millimeters.
