President Javier Milei has announced the implementation of sanctions against companies that partake in oil extraction in the Falkland Islands without Argentina’s authorization, as well as the construction of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego.
This Thursday, Milei informed during a speech that he will sign a decree to expedite the sanctions imposed by Law 26.659, which will be applied to those conducting oil extraction activities in the British-occupied Argentine territory. “Tonight I will sign a decree to accelerate the sanctioning procedures,” he stated.
Additionally, the president mentioned that he will strengthen the mechanisms for detecting and exchanging information necessary to facilitate the application of sanctions against shareholders, directors, and suppliers of the involved companies. He emphasized that companies operating in the Falklands without the proper Argentine authorization will be disqualified.
The announcement also includes the establishment of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego as part of a strategy to expand the resources of the Ministry of Defense. Milei highlighted that this base will be crucial for Argentina’s geopolitical projection in the region. Furthermore, a bill will be sent to Congress that will toughen sanctions and penalties for companies involved in unauthorized operations, also encompassing their suppliers.
The new legal framework provides for the creation of a National Security Council responsible for defining national security policies and protecting the country’s critical infrastructure. “National security is not just the physical defense of our territory,” he explained, emphasizing its importance in the economic development and prosperity of the nation.
Milei also referred to Antarctica as a strategic area for Argentina, mentioning that the country has a historical presence in the region. He insisted that any action regarding the Falkland Islands will be viewed as a violation of Argentina’s national security.
In his speech, he mentioned the recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump about reevaluating his support for the United Kingdom in the sovereignty dispute over the Falklands, interpreting this as an opportunity for the country. Milei reaffirmed that the Falklands are Argentine by history and right, calling on his allies not to ignore the situation of sovereignty and resources in the region.
