General Víctor Revoredo, director of Criminal Investigation at the National Police of Peru, addressed his reaction to journalists regarding the physical differences among the five detainees linked to a recent kidnapping and massacre in Trujillo.
Revoredo explained during a press interaction that his laughter at the situation stemmed from his satisfaction in the capture of Jhonsson Smit Cruz Torres, known as ‘Jhonsson Pulpo’, the leader of the criminal organization ‘Los Pulpos’. He had gone to the cathedral to give thanks, although he was not allowed entry. «And if there are people who are hurt by my reaction, let them be hurt. I did it with my heart. When the people of Trujillo were shot at, I captured them. When kidnappings occurred, I captured them. I have never disrespected the people of Trujillo. Never!» he stated.
When asked about the images that sparked controversy and mockery online, Revoredo remarked on the existence of freedom to create such content and avoided engaging with his critics. «There is a right to do so. I cannot confront anyone. I did not come here to defend myself. I came to work, and I have always done that. I will never lower my head, never!» he added.
The general’s comments came as he was leaving the Government Regional Headquarters of La Libertad when questioned about the physical appearance and height of those captured compared to the suspects involved in the attack, who were clad in attire resembling that of the Special Group Against Organized Crime (Grecco). Revoredo, faced with persistent questioning, responded, «Long live Peru!”, and when pressed on whether he was being ironic, he did not elaborate further. According to local media reports, he was seen hurriedly searching for his vehicle.
Revoredo expressed his unwavering respect for Trujillo and Peru, saying, «Please, long live Peru. The Police love Trujillo and love Peru. Just wait a few moments.» His comments led to a flurry of memes circulating on social media.
Addressing the allegations surrounding the detainees, he stated it is up to the authorities to establish responsibility. He added, «It is the Public Ministry, it is the Judiciary, it is the National Police of Peru, which will report after fifteen days, and then you will draw your conclusions. My role was to intensify operations to locate Johnson, and I achieved that goal.»
On Sunday morning, businessman Jenss Marty Lara Tantaquilla, aged 31, was kidnapped in Trujillo after armed individuals in police uniforms intercepted his luxury vehicle, killing four companions immediately. The group, which included two women, was returning from a nightclub and was attacked.
Lara Tantaquilla was previously apprehended in 2020 during ‘Los Topos del Frío’, an operation targeting illegal mining aimed at dismantling four family clans involved in the illicit extraction and trade of gold in the Pataz province. The operation led to the arrest of 17 individuals, including two Chinese nationals, and the seizure of nearly 220 kilograms of suspected illegal gold valued around 10 million dollars at that time.
