US President Donald Trump stated that the United Kingdom did not provide military support during the conflict in Iran and was evasive regarding potential American backing in the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands. These comments were made in an interview with British news outlet GB News.
Trump questioned the military capability of the United Kingdom, claiming it relies on the Strait of Hormuz for its oil supply, which, according to him, makes the lack of British support during the conflict even more remarkable. “Your country is not doing well. Don’t forget that it gets a large percentage of its oil from the Strait of Hormuz, and you weren’t there to help me,” the president stated.
In the same dialogue, he recounted that he had requested support from NATO and from Keir Starmer, then British leader, who informed him that the United Kingdom did not have available vessels. “I asked NATO, and I asked your former leader: ‘Why didn’t you send a couple of boats?’. He told me they didn’t have them, and it was quite sad all around,” Trump indicated.
Regarding the Falklands War, host Bev Turner questioned Trump on whether the United States would support the United Kingdom if Argentina were to claim sovereignty. The president recalled the 1982 conflict, stating: “I was there when it was the first war. It was a long time ago and I watched it very closely, and you (the United Kingdom) conducted yourselves very well. You recovered them quite firmly, but that was a long time ago. It’s a long journey, a long way.”
Labour Minister Anna Turley responded to Trump’s statements emphasizing the British government’s stance, asserting: “The Falklands are British and will remain British.” As for his feelings about the lack of British support during the war in Iran, Trump chose to label it as a “learning process.”
Since Argentine President Javier Milei announced he would address the issue of the Falklands in a national broadcast, the Government has maintained a tight-lipped stance on the details of the sovereignty claim. It is expected that the president will provide a statement at 21:00 Argentine time, coordinated with teams from the Foreign Office and the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE). Recently, a meeting was reported between Milei and key officials, as well as the visit of a British businessman to the Casa Rosada.
