President Claudia Sheinbaum detailed on Thursday the most important aspects of her meeting with former Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which took place at the Palacio Nacional and focused on his new book and the geopolitics of Latin America.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum shared that Petro spoke to her about the work he is drafting, in which he explores themes previously discussed from his own perspective and with information not limited to Colombia. His book includes reflections on how digital platforms can influence external elections, the organization of the “international right” in the region, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
Sheinbaum emphasized that she presented the Mexican perspective, indicating that there is a majority in the country that supports the Fourth Transformation and the achievements of her government, contrasting with the concerns raised by Petro about the situation in other countries. Additionally, the president extended an invitation to Petro to offer talks through the Institute of History and the Mexican Revolution.
The day before his meeting with Sheinbaum, Petro had given a lecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he warned that “Mexico is in danger” due to an electoral manipulation system that could be repeated in the 2027 midterm elections and in the general elections in Brazil. He attributed the success of the far-right Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia to this same mechanism, suggesting that it may have been monitored by the U.S. Department of State.
The meeting with Sheinbaum marked the conclusion of Petro’s agenda in Mexico, where he arrived on August 31 on his first international trip since leaving the presidency on August 7. During his visit, he also met with other figures of the Latin American left, including former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. Despite the invitation for academic activities in Mexico, Petro chose to remain in Colombia.
