Journalist Carlos Jiménez has shared his experience regarding the shocking case of the massacre of Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist of the band Camilo Séptimo, and his family, which occurred in Atizapán de Zaragoza. This crime has shaken those covering cases of violence and drug trafficking.
The journalist, who specializes in crimes, recounted that the brutality of the attack left a deep emotional mark on him. He detailed that Meléndez, his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter, a 21-year-old housekeeper, and their dog were murdered in their home, with the only survivor being the couple’s six-year-old son. “It’s one of the most difficult, most harrowing images I have had to see,” Jiménez commented on a radio program.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico reported that the attack occurred between 5:30 PM and 7:40 PM on September 1, 2026, in an apartment in the Grand Viure subdivision. The crime scene was described as devastating, with blood traces from little Sofía who walked before being killed, suggesting that the attacker sequentially targeted each family member while demanding something from them.
Initially, it was believed that the crime might be linked to a demand for 300,000 pesos due to a property dispute in the Valle de Bravo area. Jiménez explained that a friend of Meléndez alerted the authorities after not hearing from him for several hours, which led to police intervention, although the alleged perpetrator had already escaped by that time.
The investigations focus on a possible business relationship and an economic dispute between the victims and the arrested individuals, Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N”, who were apprehended on September 2. Authorities suspect that the motive for the crime is related to a debt and administrative issues at a travel agency where Meléndez and Sebastián were partners.
The violence unleashed during this attack has drawn attention to the insecurity and crime issues in the region, prompting authorities to intensify their investigations in search of justice for the victims.
