Lisa, a member of BLACKPINK, has shared how the K-Pop industry has influenced her romantic life. In her upcoming documentary, Always Lalisa, the Thai artist explores the restrictions idols face in their romantic relationships.
Lisa remarked that she kept several of her relationships private during her time with BLACKPINK, fearing that her visibility could negatively impact the group’s perception among their fans. “In K-pop culture, we can’t date,” she points out in the documentary.
The singer, whose full name is Lalisa Manobal, adds that if a relationship is discovered by paparazzi, it can affect the artist’s popularity. “If you’re dating someone and the paparazzi catches you, your popularity drops,” she explained, emphasizing her desire to protect BLACKPINK from any negative repercussions.
Additionally, she reveals that one of her secret relationships inspired the song “Dream,” included in her album Alter Ego, which will be released in 2025. Before releasing the song, she returned to the person involved to obtain their permission, and that person agreed on the condition that their identity would not be revealed.
In the same context, other BLACKPINK members have also discussed the challenges of having an exposed love life. Rosé, for example, mentioned in an interview her own experiences and the extreme measures she took to maintain her privacy, such as using “carefully crafted disguises.”
The documentary Always Lalisa, directed by Sue Kim and produced by Sony Music Vision, RCA Records, and Tremolo Productions, will premiere worldwide on September 11 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will subsequently be shown in IMAX theaters and other cinemas on October 12. The documentary will also be released on YouTube Premium in 2026.
