Kristal Silva has come to the defense of María Vargas, the new Miss Universe Mexico 2026, amid the criticism that arose after her coronation in Los Cabos.
In an interview, Silva expressed her support for Vargas, asserting that the representative from Jalisco deserved the victory and that the controversies surrounding the pageant have rekindled public interest in beauty contests. She clarified that she had been watching the competition from the beginning and backed Vargas’s performance during the final held on August 29.
María Vargas, 28, took over the title left by Fátima Bosch and will represent Mexico at the upcoming Miss Universe 2026, scheduled for November 24 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Silva, who was Miss Universe Mexico in 2016, noted that the pressure on public figures has increased with social media activity, but also emphasized that criticism is part of the journey in their careers.
Regarding the controversy surrounding Vargas, Silva opined that it has sparked a debate that hasn’t been seen in years and could be positive for the pageant. “It’s good for the public to pay attention to beauty contests,” she commented. Maria Vargas has also faced criticism for her national costume, Cosmos Wixárika, designed by Joel García, which some considered not representative of Mexico for an international audience.
