Christian Lara has backed the modifications announced for TV Azteca’s news programs, asserting that the network will maintain a strong stance against what she describes as attempts at censorship promoted by the 4T.
In an interview, Lara stated that the changes in programming will not affect the editorial commitment to inform “clearly, with the truth” and to defend freedom of expression in Mexico. The adjustments in programming come after three years of broadcasting alongside Roberto Ruiz Lara, who will now lead a late-night debate and research panel on ADN República, while she returns to a news program she knows well after working with Alejandro Villalvazo for a decade.
The journalist noted that changes in schedules and formats will not alter the message conveyed on screen. “The reality is that the message doesn’t change, what changes is only the space,” she affirmed. Furthermore, she framed these changes within a context of tension between the broadcaster and the federal government, citing reports of censorship and persecution from institutions linked to the 4T.
Lara expressed that informative spaces must respond to the public’s need to know the truth about what is happening in the country, emphasizing that this is especially relevant at the current moment. “We are at a time in the country that precisely needs that, that we go out on the screens to talk and say what is happening in our country and without lies,” she indicated.
Addressing the network’s stance towards what she considers attacks on freedom of expression, Lara declared: “We will be very firm” in the new phase of the news programs. This statement comes amid controversy regarding comments made by Claudia Sheinbaum, who suggested that the public should not watch TV Azteca, accusing it of spreading “lies.” This has been interpreted by some hosts as an attempt at political pressure.
The federal government, for its part, maintains that its criticisms are part of a necessary debate in the public sphere.
