Pedro Sánchez appears today, September 3, before Congress to explain the migratory crisis in Ceuta, which began on July 30 when tens of thousands of individuals crossed the border irregularly from Morocco.
The intervention follows weeks of political and social pressure, with the autonomous city still tense due to the care of those remaining there and questions about the State’s response. A police report has indicated that Moroccan security forces played an active role in the planning and execution of the incursion.
Aina Vidal, the deputy spokesperson for Sumar in Congress, rejected the narrative of «invasion» presented by Vox and highlighted the situation of the minors who arrived in Ceuta. «They were children, not invaders or soldiers. They came with a float, crying,» she emphasized. She criticized Alberto Núñez Feijóo for confusing patriotism with symbols, asserting that true patriotism involves addressing the country’s problems.
Enrique Santiago, a deputy from Sumar and spokesperson for Izquierda Unida, claimed that Spain experienced «an attack from Morocco using vulnerable individuals» and characterized the mass entry as a «destabilization operation with political and geostrategic intentions,» allegedly organized by Morocco in coordination with the United States and Israel.
Santiago called for the urgent transfer of those who have not returned to the Peninsula and indicated that there are over 10,000 available reception places. He asserted that the law prohibits the return of minors and insisted that the government must guarantee the rights of migrants.
Vox leader Santiago Abascal accused Sánchez of acting with «submission» towards Morocco and dismissed the events in Ceuta as anything other than an invasion. He criticized the president for taking 35 days to appear before Congress after the mass entry and questioned the government’s lack of transparency regarding its actions and knowledge of the situation.
Feijóo also criticized Sánchez’s response, saying that he arrived at Congress having failed to understand the situation in Ceuta. He referenced the police report to indicate that the operation was orchestrated by Morocco, which the government previously acknowledged.
Sánchez announced an extraordinary effort of 309 million euros to support Ceuta’s situation until December 31, equivalent to 16% of the city’s GDP. He assured that financial aid would begin by October 6 and reinforced that the government would never relinquish sovereignty over Ceuta.
Furthermore, Sánchez stated that Felipe VI would visit Ceuta «in the coming weeks» to reaffirm the institutions’ commitment to the autonomous cities, emphasizing that Ceuta and Melilla would be represented in the European Committee of the Regions and that the government would propose their classification as outermost regions within the European Union.
